Hmm, so I haven't seen anything about this in here and I think it should be in here. Still haven't got an e-tag, don't really think I will. I don't use any of those roads regularly, but I also haven't seen a faq except at the AA website but it isn't really what I was looking for. So I hope with the help of this community we might be able to write up a factual FAQ.

I don't know everything about the e-tolling, but I do have a few questions and I would assume there are a lot more on here have a few questions. I have found a few answers to my own questions so I will post them here. You can also ask questions and I will put it on here. If you can answer a few questions it will be much appreciated.

I will also keep 2 posts space if we want to split this FAQ into sections
If I can figure out how to put the stuff in those spoiler brackets I will do so.

FAQ on Costs

1. Is there any place I can find out how much my daily commute will be?

2. What are the admin fees per month if you purchase an e-tag?

As far as I can see on sanral's website the only admin fee is the statement which ranges from free for email to R5 for a letter

3. What is the maximum amount they are allowed to charge me?

If you have an e-tag and have a light vehicle or a motorbike the maximum they can charge you is R550

If you don't have an e-tag you won't have a maximum ceiling like e-tag holders

4. How does the time discounts work?

There are 5 time periods
1. Peak time (6h00 - 10h00 and 14h00 - 18h00) - No discount
2. Mid day (10h00 - 14h00) - 5% discount
3. Off peak (5h00 - 6h00 and 18h00 - 23h00) - 10% discount
4. Weekends peak (6h00-18h00) - 15% discount
5. Night, weekend off peak and public holidays - 25% discount

5. Are we being billed per kilometer?

We are actually not, we are being billed per toll gantry. If you drive underneath it you will pay a fixed amount

Legal FAQ's

1. Will I lose my license if I don't pay my e-toll bill?

Not at the moment, traffic officers may only inform you that you have an outstanding e-toll bill

2. What can SANRAL do to me if I don't pay my e-toll bill?

They can summons you and then force you by law to pay your account. I don't know about the legality of the R1.75 per kilometre story so help on that would be appreciated

I will add things when I have more time and if you have some interesting questions and answers

So it's safe to say that only e-tag owners will be capped at R550? Why not the numberplate? Government knows what type vehicle is registered.

one thing i dont understand.
We are being billed per kilometer, the e-tolls are not on the on ramps, so from when am i being charged?

For example, if I look at the map on:
http://tollcalc.ensightnetworks.com/etoll/

and i wanna travel from William Nicole to Rivonia....am i being charged from the minute i pass the tollgate to the offramp?

The tolls for a gantry are calculated on the amount of KMs since the last one times the cost per KM. If you got on the highway in between two gantries than you will be charged as if you joined the highway at the previous gantry, i.e. the full cost for that stretch of the road.

You are NOT being billed per kilometer. That whole schpiel was a lie from SCAMRAL.
You are billed per gantry you pass, regardless of how many KM of road you actually used.

Each Gantry has a fixed price. You pay this price when you drive through it. They don't care where you came from or how far you drove or where you are leaving. If the gantry fee is ,say, R6.50, you pay R6.50. Even if you just joined the freeway 100m before the gantry. Even worse is that they have placed the gantries at hotspot intersections to earn the most money from people entering and leaving the notfreeway network. That is why this whole scam needs to die and die soon.

Their whole scam has been perpetuated by the "per-KM" pricing you keep reading about it. IT IS A LIE.

Most people are going to pay way more than "30c a KM" on average for driving on the notfreeway.

I became aware of this when they started putting up the prices for the gantries. The 3km of highway I use in the afternoons will end up being R1/km (effectively).

This brings me to my question: how do you interpret the prices listed on the gantry boards? Seeing as there are different rates for registered and un-registered users, will SANRAL just bill you differently? If so, on what rate are the advertised numbers based and how can you check if you've been billed correctly?

...somehow I suspect the monthly cap is only there to stop people from looking at the actual numbers and the calculations employed...

so,back to my question, if i travel between William Nicole and Rivonia, i will get billed the kilometers from the mallibonogow gate till William Nicole?

If you drive underneath a toll gate, which you will you will pay either R4,99 or R2,58 depending if you have an e-tag. This is during peak times, so no deductions for time savings.

On your way back you don't pay anything, because there is no tolls on that side.

No tolling on roads that haven’t been completed
TOLLING won’t start on the N12 east of the Gillooly’s interchange yet because the road isn’t finished.

“Only e-toll gantries on roads that are completed will be activated on April 30,” said Department of Transport spokesman Tiyani Rikhotso.

The SA National Roads Agency Ltd has said “all the toll points on the N12 from Gillooly’s interchange to Kingsway, the Daveyton/Springs interchange”, would not be tolled until the road was finished.

There are five toll points between Gillooly’s and Kingsway. On the eastbound road, Gull gantry is just before the Rondebult interchange, Bee-eater gantry is between Atlas and Snake roads, and Ugaga gantry must still be built at Kingsway. On the westbound side, Ilanda gantry is at the Rietfontein (R21) interchange and the Loerie gantry at the Gillooly’s (N3) interchange.

The standard tariff for a car for the four gantries already built would be R22.16, or R11.46 for the highest discounts, or R66.48 at punitive rates for unregistered users who pay late.

If you head out of Joburg through Gillooly’s towards Mpumalanga, don’t expect to drive at more than 80km/h until you are past Kingsway and off the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) road.

This is what you will find on the N12: battered, scarred and uneven road surfaces; concrete blocks running down the centre of the road; lanes that dodge across the freeway; two rather than four lanes in each direction; faded or no paint for lane markings; potholes; endless deviation and roadwork signs; speed limits that constantly change between 80km/h and 60km/h; unfinished off- and on-ramps; high-mast lights still being installed; construction vehicles everywhere; irate, speeding motorists; and vehicle debris from accidents.

Despite the mess, Sanral expects to finish most of it within weeks.

Work started on Package I – Gillooly’s to Rietfontein interchanges – in May 2008 and Sanral expects this to be finished next month.

Work on Package K – Rietfontein to Tom Jones interchanges – started in June 2009 and Sanral said this should be finished this month or in May.

Package L is on the Tom Jones to Daveyton interchanges. Sanral said work started on much of this section in March 2011 – later than the other sections, as it was added to the GFIP later – and the package is due to be finished only in September next year.

“These completion dates are dependent on weather/climatic conditions as well as availability of bitumen, which could delay completion,” said Sanral.

On the rest of the GFIP, Sanral is getting ready for the April 30 start to e-tolling by putting up signs listing the charges at each gantry.

The signs do not list Sanral’s “standard tariff” charges, which were gazetted on Friday, but rather the much cheaper tariff for registered e-tag users.

None of the bloody roads are completed. They're STILL ****ing digging them up.

What's going to happen to the Gosforth Plaza?

I think I saw somewhere that Gosforth is going to be converted to e-Tag, not sure though

Just checked the Scamral site, doesn't indicate anything
