E-Tolls Begin in Two Months

There was a article that they want to close the RTMC, which administrates AARTO, so who know wtf's going to happen...

There's too much invested for them to get this far and allow a menial little bill to prevent the raping of wallets...

I think civil disobedience and taking alternative routes will prove to be too tedious and eventually motorists will just give in and pay to make things easier. Hopefully I'm wrong.

You aren't. Most South Africans kick up a fuss, moan like crazy and then when push comes to shove, pull out wallets and pay.

It's sad, but that's the reality.

Amount of people bitching and moaning: 20,000,000-odd South Africans.
Amount of people actively doing something about it/protesting it: Give or take 10,000.

Difference is you can protest this passively by just ignoring the system until it collapses under its own inefficiency.

I will NEVER pay these thieves. The mere fact that taxis don't have to pay is the cherry on top of the corruption.

Yep, that is the key here... This system will ultimately fail because the default mode of "do nothing" is the one that is most destructive for it.

Don't buy e-tags

Don't open invoices

The simplest way to bring Sanral to its knees.

If the SA public can't restrain themselves to not do these two things then let them get taken to the cleaners.

I was hoping it would only start next year, so it'd be fresh in the minds when voting...

Already worked out an alternate route to avoid the toll. I for one won't purchase an e-tag The only hastle is we will still pay in transport costs for various items delivered to the local supermarkets

It was estimated that fewer than 60,000 of Gauteng’s 3.5 million motorists had purchased e-tags.

“Sanral’s claim that there have been 600,000 tags signed up is misleading as we know they have given most of these to the fleet management and government fleet organisations,” Duvenage said

60,000 or even 600,000 - the bigger number is still less than one quarter of the total.

Does anyone think Sanral has the capacity to administrate more than 2 million postal invoices every month /week and then take action against those who don't pay ?

They're trying to have the law changed with the Sanral act iirc, to allow them carte blanche in the recovery mechanism and to exclude them from Aarto and other road traffic provisions, particularly the onerous postal requirements. So one can easily assume that they are in no way capable of handling the vast quantities required.

This has got to go down as one of the most poorly managed projects I have ever heard of. They are years behind implementation, years behind construction as well, and the legal framework to provision their existence isn't in place, and could jeapordise their entire investment at the last hurdle. Who the hell runs a project this way, let alone a private business (which is what Sanral is)?!

It is pathetic on government's part and they will not hold their citizens to ransom to fix their own ineptitude and corruption. Nobody should stand for this sort of manipulation and thievery, no matter where in the country you are...

Thereafter hundreds of thousands of middle fingers will be raised in response.

And that will be that.

When those debt collection letters for unpaid bills come in and threats of summons and bad credit ratings as well as driver's license suspensions, people will wet their pants and pay up. That will be that.

People will just have to tighten their belts.

All 2 million debt collection letters.

Every month.

Think our courts are up to that ?

driver's license suspensions

And how are they going to implement that - take away the licence of a fleet owner whose driver is doing his deliveries ?

What about all the cars from Zim - are they going to be stopped at the border for not paying their tolls ~ oh wait, they are not registered here.

Yes ultimately they will. I think so.

When $$$ is involved, new ways of doing things will be found. Never say never.

They have two months.

I doubt they have any clue how to charge foreign vehicles and I really doubt they have a comprehensive database of every single taxi in the country.

The moment they try anything draconian to 'persuade' delinquent payers the queue will start forming outside the Con Court.

Any threats at the moment are little more than desperation. How they sleep at night knowing they have no control over 3 million drivers ....

They'll need to change the law for that to happen...
