i think i mentioned this before, but i'll have another go.
most dvb-t sets sold here in europe also have cam slots. for pay-tv.
so, you can receive 60 channels over dvb-t, and if you stick your valid-paid-up smartcard in then the other 5 get decrypted...and you get 65 (or whatever..)
i had a think about this a while ago and i think it is the perfect time for sabc to introduce a smartcard. pay your tv license, smartcard is valid, channels decrypted...dont pay tv license, smartcard gets revoked. dont like the idea? they dont care, analogue is switched off...so you either pay tv license or you dont watch
i'm not saying they are going to do this.
i'm not saying they should do this.
what i am saying is that in my little head where everyone else is a devious little thief, i think they can do this.
an example is
www.topuptv.com transmitted over the existing dvb-t uk freeview network, giving access to setanta sports and some cartoon channels if you have a valid paid-up smartcard.
To ivork, you are right that they dont have control over your hardware, but that doesnt mean they wont broadcast encrypted. you will also have a tough time finding readily available dvb-t pc cards with cam slots.
i'm also a bit perplexed at what e-tv are trying to argue against.
seeing as you need a tv license in s.a. to receive broadcast transmissions (channel agnostic), if someone hasnt got a license it would be within the power of the licensing authorities to prevent them watching tv...not just sabc channels, but all tv (as per the letter of the law, not my personal opinion)
so if sabc do implement cams and cut people off, are e-tv arguing that unlicensed viewers should still be able to receive e-tv?
if they are, that is clearly against the law, as already written.
