Have 2 E1820. One from MTN and another one from CellC.
MTN one had firmware 11.828.03.00.00 and CellC - 11.831........
Inside NO hardware difference!!!
Look like 11.831 enables 900MHz for data. With MTN SIM in CellC 1820 i can see CellC 2G+3G network.
Who can advise how to copy 11.831 from CellC modem and upgrade 11.828 in MTN E1820?
Or where to get 11.831 original firmware?

If you see CellC 3G, why you need new firmware? It means that 900MHz is aleready enabled, BTW, it is hardware feature, not firmware.

You can flash this firmware with CellC firmware because it ends with 00, but to revert it back it depends on version you are flashing. Does CellC firmware ends with 00 or 03. If not, you would need firmware code.

Really? Write down markings on the 3 or 4 big chips, there are inside metal shields, you need to remove it

How can you see Cell-C's network with an MTN SIM?

What happens if you insert the Cell-C SIM into the MTN E1820?

BTW - my electronics design experiense ~30y. ALL chips and parts inside IDENTICALL. Both modems are CP12TCPU hardware version!
With MTN SIM inside and manual registration i can see 4 networks. VODA (2G)(3G), MTN(3G), CellC(2G)(3G) and SA02(3G)(????????!!! Cops? gov?).
I'm looking for Firmware version11.831.03.00.00 installer.

Made couple speed tests. With single modem DL 4-5M, UL - 1-1.5M. Tryed "antenna" - wire 75-80mm 0.5dia. Have to be VERTICAL.
Speed DL 8.5 - 10M, UL 3.8M. HOUGHTON Estate.

I have seen a Cell-C SIM working on UMTS 900 in a Vodafone K4505 (rebadged Huawei E1820) without having to change the firmware.

SA02 is Telkom 3G / 8TA

If your game maybe here:
11.831.06.01.464
http://www.telusmobility.com/en/BC/huawei_e182e_sup/trouble10.shtml

If you look in the "firmware upgrade guide" the last picture also shows the same hardware version as CP12TCPU
That network looks like it works on 1900/850 MHz so maybe its not such a hot idea
Let us know if you try it.

Modems manufactured for different markets cover differend frequencies bands, but hardware version is the same. It could be different filters or configuration data or even different tranceiver chips. Firmware can be smart, so it can detect the chip, but there might be problems with filters. So, guess, should have firmware backup.

Tried that firmware above for a few days hoping there was maybe some reception benefits but there wasn't any & nothing else great to report from it.
Nothing i noticed anyway.

Note: Tinkering required to get back to original firmware!

I see my E1820's firmware version is 11.825.03.00.00. This link has firmware version 11.831.06.01.464. I read somewhere else that the E182e is the same as the E1820 except for some minor band differences. So would this firmware be worth a try to remedy this stuck on EDGE problem? Would I void my warranty by upgrading?

What is a "minor band difference"?

AFAIK the original E1820 could only do UMTS 2100 but Cell C had it modded to cover UMTS 900 as well. If you google the specs on these things most sites say the E182e does all the 3G bands i.e. 850, 900, 1900, 2100 and the E1820 only the 2100. Even with this difference, which we don't have with the Cell C ones, the firmware for both modems are the same, again as far as I can gather.
