How does one go about changing the VMC software (not firmware) on the E220. The version is 2.2x and I would like to change it to 3.x.

The VMClite software only installs to the PCs HD.

Not to worry, figured it out.

okay, so tell us!

I upgraded to V3.2.1.156 last night...and it reported the upgrade as successful, but how do I now start the app?

On v2 I used to click on the VMC_PBstarter application, now in the new version that app is no longer there?

The application should start automatically with Windows Autoplay.

It used to with V2 if I connected the E220, but now with V3 Vista says VMCLiteSetup wants to run, I click on "allow" and then nothing happens.

The version 3 software takes a while to load. I've seen it take 2 to 3 minutes to start up the setup program to install VMC Lite 3.2. Once the setup process starts you'll be greeted with a screen asking for Language, you can leave it at English (United States) and click OK. The rest is next next next. The VMC Lite software should start up, once it has finished installing and setting up the device. If not, just unplug the modem and plug it back in again.

I would suggest you uninstalled the older version though, before installing 3.2.

Also the downloads off the Vodacom website are zero-rated, you don't get charged for it, they don't come off your data bundle, and the only sharks are in the sea.

Uninstall version 2 then re-install version 3. This should fix it. So you gotta start from scratch. Remove everything, then install version 3.

Uninstall from where? I don't think it's installed anywhere?

Under Add/Remove Programs, it should be listed as Vodafone Mobile Connect Runtime Components, or something like that.

okay, I see I've got "Vodafone Mobile Connect Lite Runtime Components" installed on the notebook. So I should remove these?

And then install what?

Here is what I mean: Zero-rated means do not get charged for it, right..but then why is my data bundle exactly 17MB less after downloading the upgrade off the sanctioned website (vodacome4me):

before: "Your current account balance is R41.51 You have 227.03MB available to use. Your data bundle will expire on 20090419."
after:"Your current account balance is R41.51 You have 210.89MB available to use. Your data bundle will expire on 20090419."

Please explain why there was a "charge"on my data bundle.

Weird. Email Customer Care and make an inquiry as to why you got charged for it.

Remove that from Add/Remove programs. Then delete the Vodafone folder from Program Files(if it is there) just to be sure its gone.

Then you plug in the modem and install version 3 which you updated to.

You will be charged for downloads from Data Bundle!

I did call 155 and they confirmed that data bundle will be charged--zero-rating my a*se!

Sharks, skebengu!
All the way!

And Also on the Vodacom Downloads page there is this message:

Note: All downloads available on this page are zero-rated to Vodacom customers. There is no charge for your download from this page, when you connect to this site from a Vodacom SIM card.

"Uninstall previous versions of the VMC lite" is missing from these instructions:

"Firmware/Software upgrade instructions:
=======================================
Firmware vs Software
====================
In order for a DataCard to function, it relies on two applications or programmes. One application resides on the card itself and the other application resides on the computer that the card is installed into. The Application that resides on the card is called Firmware and the application that resides on the computer is called Software.

Installation Instructions
=========================
Select the file and choose save. Save the file to a folder of your choice.
Select the folder where you have saved the file and unzip the file to the same folder. This can be done by "right clicking" on the file and select extract all.
Remove your data card from your notebook (use the Windows "Safely Remove Hardware" option)
Remove the SIM from the data card
Re-insert the data card into the notebook
Ensure that the Vodafone Mobile Connect software application is not running. Exit the application if it is running
Run the setup.exe file in the folder where the download was saved
Upon successful completion of the firmware upgrade, remove the data card from the notebook (use the Windows "Safely Remove Hardware" option)
Re-insert the SIM card into the data card
Re-insert the data card into the notebook
Open the Vodafone Mobile Connect software application
