They are still supplying 3g/USB Modems with VMC 9.1 which is known to have issues over a year after the software problems were identified.

I had to use almost 82Mb of my monthly allocation just to download the updated version.

Any chance of them crediting me the usage? ;)

I'm working on getting the download zero-rates, i.e. you won't pay for the data to download updates.

I dunno if this is still offered by the VodaShops or VodaCare places, but I remember a while ago, a customer could just walk into the stores and ask them for the latest software version and they would have it available on CD or they would just write a copy of the latest software on CD for them.

Feedback I got from Vodacom was that, it's my choice to download the software update.

But that's not the point.

Why can't they hand out an updated CD when you get the modem ? Why does one have to go through the pain of loading software that doesn't work ?

Can you 100% confirm you did pay for the download?

From which site did you download? Can you give me the full URL?

Sounds like my zero-rated download request have already been implemented.

Hi Vodacom3G

This is certainly a great development - can I contact PR for the full story?

Let me get confirmation it's 100% in place. I was surprised to hear it's already working.

And while everyone will say it should be this way in any case (and I agree), remember no-one else gives their downloads/updates for free. You pay for your Microsoft / Adobe / etc. updates.

So I'm sure it'll be a first. (and another forum request implemented)

OK, just had a check on my balances and it appears that the update download WAS NOT deducted from my remaining bundle.

If that is truly the case then a big-ups to Vodacom.

May I suggest another url: http://*.*
:D
I agree that Vodacom should look into zero-rating this group of sites. I often use it to find information and download content. If really necessary they can exclude mtn.co.za, cellc.co.za and telkom.co.za :D

I'll drop Telkom in a heartbeat. :)

A big thank you to v3g for fighting for this on our behalf :).

While the thread title is ironically at odds with the current reality that software update downloads from vodacom.co.za are now free of charge, The Thug does still have a point about retail outlets providing old s/w with new modems, IMO this will be highly dependent on which retail outlet one gets one's modem from - some outlets will be far more clued up and customer-oriented than others.

@The Thug, which retail outlet [name & location] gave you the old s/w with your modem?

The CD was probably in the box. Of course nothing stops the shops now to download the latest software / firmware and keep it in-store.

Reality is, software that ships on CD with products is nearly always out of date by the time you get it. I don't even bother to take the CD for any product out of the jacket. I immediately download the latest version and install that.

Perhaps a bulletin needs to be sent out to inform retail outlets about the zero-rated downloads?
