e220 - underpowered/pcmcia power status

I know this prolly needs to go to hardware section....

Does anyone know of a pcmcia usb (without external power - otherwise its not mobile) card that works with the e220.

sunix 3port usb2.0 cardbus 5v 1000mA (cbu1080n) doesn't work..

i've contacted huawei - and they said:

"You are advised to contact your local network provider directly.you can find it by South Africa Representative Office".

Have you tried the supplied cable that draws power of 2 USB ports?

yip - doesn't help . the thing that worries me a bit tho - i can operate an external notebook hdd - that does require 2 usb power points....that works 100% on the sunix cardbus

And if you run it off a powered USB hub it works?

I never use the dual cable on any of my laptops and have never had a problem.

Long shot; maybe the latest firmware does better power management?

i have not tried an external usb hub. this e220 works 100% in other notebooks/pcs - if you use 1 or 2 usb points.

the thing is - she is blind , so to make things easier - everything must be "centralized" with as little # of cables possible..

i'll try organize a hub and let you know.

firmware/dashboard has been updated...no diff.

BIOS upgrade, followed by checking if there are newer Windoze USB drivers.

How old is this notebook|PC? - is it definitely spec'ed for USB2?

You're not still running XP SP1 by any chance? USB2 prefers SP2.

First check for Bios and Windows updates as recommended above. If you search for information regarding the exact error message you may find a specific Windows fix. You could also look at www.usbman.com for some other ideas. Are any other devices attached to the USB ports such as a mouse etc. which might be using current?

Maybe you could construct a three connector to one connector cable so that you can draw power simultaneously from the third USB port?

The Sunix CBU1080N uses the NEC UPD720101 chipset which is supposedly the best USB controller available. You could also try another brand of PCMCIA USB controller that uses a different chipset (VIA 6212 etc.) or a self-powered hub (with external power supply) as mentioned above such as these.

See the comments at the end of this link regarding powering an E220 modem. I would be a bit hesitant just to use a USB power pack instead of a hub though!

Hey...there is no "error message" - its a case of not having enough power to start the device - the green light is blinking VERY FAINTLY at best using the sunix.

Hp 530 notebook - downgraded to xp.sp2 - have done ALL the updates.

This notebook is 6 weeks old..customer signed a contract with vodacom to get notebook and e220 (500mb).

Have only 3 choices at the moment: a)get another pcmcia card to test with b)try a hub with external power c)send in notebook for repairs..

Usb ports were damaged during a fall. (from couch to carpet)

Here are some other ideas ...

To check current consumption of a device connected to USB go to:
Control Panel>system>Hardware>Device manager
Open the tree Universal Serial Bus controllers
If using external not self powered usb hub to check current consumption of devices connected to it, double click on XXXX USB Hub and open tab power, and if device connected to usb on mother board do the some thing as described above with USB Root Hub.

Go to device manger and right click on all the usb ports and click properties, then go to the power tab and uncheck "allow windows to turn device off to save power"

Do the following steps, to resolve the USB Power Surge alert message,
Click on START
Click on CONTROL PANEL
Double-click on the SYSTEM icon
Click on the HARDWARE tab
Click the DEVICE MANAGER button
Click the + next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers to expand the selection.
Right-click and select PROPERTIES on the Intel® USB UNIVERSAL HOST CONTROLLER (not the USB Root Hub)
Click the ADVANCED Tab
Check the box that says: Don’t tell me about USB errors

Have the onboard (damaged) USB ports been switched off in the Bios settings if applicable and the old hub software and drivers removed correctly? Usbman has a lot of information about the correct way to reinstall USB hubs etc. What type of original (damaged) USB controller is being used on the motherboard?

If the laptop has suffered more serious damage one other option might be to connect the E220 directly to a reflashed router such as the Asus WL-500g Premium (~R850) or the cheaper WL-520gU (~R500) and then connect wirelessly to the laptop via WiFi. See here for details.
