so my car stalled last week. got towed home. towed the car to a workshop a couple of days ago. the car was swinging strongly but doesn't turn over. so they needed to do initial fault finding and diagnostics @ R1.5k.

to replace the petrol pump and a new fuel filter will cost an additional R4.1k according to the quote.

does this seem reasonable or should I just go fetch it, tow it back home and proceed to diy it? heard its a straight swop.

called masterparts and the fuel pump is R1.3k.

Slightly off topic but did the E36 also have the dual fuel tanks?

no idea

the 4.1k included a generic fuel pump. they wanted to charge me 6.7k ex vat for an agent fuel pump. just got off the phone with bmw tygervalley and it 4.5k vat included. based on that I should tell them to go shove it.

Yeah, fuel pump swap isn't difficult; it should be under the rear bench, behind the driver. There are a few fiddly bits - tank level floats and pickup filters and such - but nothing you can't do yourself. Just a word of caution: I've seen the need to do a repeat job within a few months because the generic pumps give out.

should be easy diy fix .
get a new seal aswell if car is old it could be brittle

I read the walkthrough and must admit I have no appetite for working with fuel and anything near the tank. When I read have a fire extinguisher handy then I get scared.

Disconnect the battery, and don't light a smoke with petrol soaked hands. Petrol doesn't burst into flames when you look at it wrong.

if you are in Cape Town phone this guy - found an auto electrician (pm me for details) he sorted my one out. has a retired ex BMW mechanic friend that can open the fuel pump can and service the unit - then seal it again. never had a problem with the fuel pump since it was done in 2008

think I paid R900 back then. Nelo (mobile auto electrician) came and tested the pump first, found it to be faulty then removed it and had it serviced. returned and installed it again.

Is he still decent? That's a while back

Call diesel electric, they are the bosch experts, the their prices arnt bad.

Just make sure you have the part number of the fuel tank on hand.

He seems to be very busy. Good sign I suppose. Gina wait till his available. Hopefully early next week. Thanx dude. What area is he from?
