Gauteng’s diligent motorists who heeded the SA National Roads Agency Ltd’s call to buy e-tags for the highway tolling system are being penalised.

While the toll system is coming into effect only in two months’ time, billing and SMS costs are already being deducted from their accounts.

These costs have never been divulged by Sanral and come as a slap in the face to motorists who have simply tried to do the right thing. Nowhere has the tolling authority made it clear that they plan to charge people for the SMSes and statements they will receive when they sign up for discounted toll rates.

Serves them right for supporting this scam.

The swines are charging for statements and sms’s! That’s BS. On top of the toll fee they want to add these charges – makes me mad!

The system is stuffed and they hardly have critical mass on it - big fail coming soon!

Glad that these idiots bought etags already so they can hopefully make others realize not to do the same.

Bigger issue then the guys getting charged before the system goes live is the fact that these charges even exist!

The lady loaded R50 airtime and almost all of that got used just for statements and SMS's! Its insane!

We've always wanted something to unite black/white/indian in this country, but i have an idea that this will start it all... in gauteng, its the start of SOUTH AFRICANS being tired of taken for a ride by our government...

Sorry excuse me while I laugh....

SANRAL have just given the opponents to this whole e-tag thing even MORE ammunition, as well as more of a reason for motorists to tell them to get fooked.

I don't live in JHB, but they can be damn sure I won't be paying when I do have to drive in that part of the world... and should they bring this stupid idea to my neck of the woods, I will still not get something like an etag.

Hahahaha I will not buy one of these e-tags or be ripped a new one by this scam!
I refuse to give these *****ers any of my money.

Incidentally I think the fact you are having to pay for the administration over and above the toll fees is bollocks. It's like paying at a traditional toll and then being asked to give the tollbooth operator their wages.

How are you rebels planning on avoiding this? Back roads?

Are you planning on paying this?

I'm going to drive on the roads as is my right and not pay the thieves as is also my right.

What's the punishment for doing this? Surely you'll be nabbed at roadblocks?

It is not required to have an e-Tag, its just for their so called 'Discount'.

THis is what they claim will happen:
A warning, however: although motorists aren’t obliged to buy e-tags, road users who choose not to have them must still register their vehicle licence number with Sanral or buy a day pass. The non-payment of tolls when using an e-road is a criminal offence, and Sanral warns that 24-hour police patrols will be stationed along the routes to apprehend violators.

I wanna see a few pigs pull over a couple thousand motorists

Somewhere there was a article (cant find it) on there not being any crime yet for not paying your tolls... it would thus have to be a civil matter of debt and not a criminal matter. Laws will need to be changed.
