EASSy goes live on Friday

Excellent news!!! Not only more international bandwidth but also additional redundancy!

Had to follow quite a few links to find out which landing station it will operate from at Mtunzini...

Well, it's always great news to know of another link to the outside world, but I'm going to adopt a wait and see attitude before I start jumping up and down with complete and absolute ecstasy. I don't think I'll ADSL accounts could fall tremendously lower, but hopefully some companies will start tossing their fair usage policy and shaping.

+1... agreed, except that's the same attitude everyone had before Secom's arrival, and of course we all pretty quickly saw the much doubted benefit of that one :) Let's just hope that the inland-bound link from EASSy's coastal landing station is good... because so far I'd imagine they're going to share such facility with Seacom/SAT3 which means if that national link dies, it doesnt matter how much redundancy we have to the outside world =(

I stand to be corrected (and if someone has the correct facts please do!) but this cable lands at the Telkom site and is not carried on the same Neotel link back to Gauteng. It either uses a new fibre cable (joint ownership) or the Telkom fibre links.

Good news.

Now the Seacom ISP's can now start making plans for redundancy, which should be high priority.

In the short term prices will remain as is, but in the long term we should be seeing another round of price reductions.

Don't get your hopes up too high though.

well **** me freddy... **** just keeps getting better around here.

SEACOM 1.2Tb, 80Gb lit
EASSY 1.4Tb, 30Gb lit
Why make such pitiful use of these cables?

Supply/Demand, I guess? There's simply not enough demand... it's like opening up an 8 lane highway for a trickle of 10 small cars and a motorbike per hour for the entire 8-lane road? :p Pity though, I do agree with you ;(

good news i suppose, burt i think as said above its will be a while before we benefit from it

Can we get an indication from the reps from the ISP's when this bandwidth will filter down to the consumer? I don't mean necessarily pricing wise, but just having the redundancy available?
