Eastern Cape cops to learn Mandarin

sometimes some chinese people just pretend they do not know English. It is very clever ruse and works to their advantage :-)

How many people in SA speak only Mandarin? This doesn't make sense to me. I'd rather they train every police officer in the Eastern Cape to speak English, Xhosa and Afrikaans. That would allow communication with 99% of the residents.

And how many speak ONLY English? You'll be surprised at the number. I agree, Afrikaans is much more spoken. On the other hand Afrikaans and English are the 2 languages I wished I never had to learn. Both treated the locals like animals. Actually, as much as I hate to say this, the British are/were the bigger evil. This is the only point where I agree with Mugabe. Concentration camps anyone?

The 'locals' also treated the 'invaders' like ****. Take the attacks on the Cape East Border before the Great Trek, the locals there were in fact whites [whom never had the chance of oppression against the attackers] savagely attacked and raped by southward migrating blacks. If your views entail innocent, peaceful natives juxtaposed against aggressive, despotic colonialists then they are greatly skewed.

etienne_marais, can you please provide a cite that shows the whites in the Eastern Cape never had a chance to oppress the locals?

Because it is trivial to find sources that claim the opposite.

This was largely due to colonial expansion which in turn dispossessed Xhosa and Khoikhoi people of their land and cattle among other things.

If you want to make revisionist history claims you need to back them up with facts.

You would think a passing grade for writing this article would mandate the inclusion of Chinese population figures.

You keep proving yourself a bigger idiot post by post.

Somebody doesn't know all of the South African history

I was referring to the southward migrating Bantu tribes, the frontiersmen could not have previously oppressed those Bantu because they were not previously there. What is presented on SA History Online is what I consider revisionist as opposed to the history I was handed down, look at: "For instance, the use of superior weapons such as guns quickly subdued resistance from local people" is a typical modernist approach to sketch the scenario while I believe the southward migrating tribes were savage and came from a long history of inter-tribal warfare and Bantu expansionism, plundering the farmsteads of a people they had not prior contact with. One of the many reasons I think the NSA is badly flawed as our history is being rewritten (or always has been especially by chip-on-the-should anglos who can't see the sun rising for Afrikaners and Boers).

Was hoping they could learn to do their jobs before learning anything else.

Also very peculiar that they are to learn Mandarin, yet cops in an Afrikaans neighbourhood cannot speak or understand Afrikaans and that is cool. Fokkenagsterstevoor
