Easy Equities good or bad?

Depends on how you look at it. At this point:

1 year return - 14.6%
3 year return - 30.55%
5 year return - 27.54%

Not sure it will still grow by that much going forward. If it makes 20% pa average over the next 10 years though I'll be happy (in a perfect world where inflation and everything else stays constant).

The equity unit trusts are doing worse than this. Sitting at around 4% and 5% at the moment. The way the markets have been behaving of late past performance figures are unlikely to be achieved.

Agreed

Can one open an account without proof of address?

You require proof of address for FICA, but with that said EE is very lenient with this and actually won't surprise me if they make an exception for you ie assuming you live in a hostel?

PSG on the other hand...

I would be worried if a financial institution is lenient with FICA as FICA was introduced to fight financial crime, such as money laundering, tax evasion, and terrorist financing activities.

FICA is a load of k@k at some institutions when it comes to proof of address

Worked wonders, we have absolutely no financial crime in South Africa thanks to that marvelous piece of legislation. Same thing with RICA.

this is a first...
Cant remember if i withdrew money before, but upon selling a few shares today, and trying to draw the cash i was presented with the following :
Unsettled Cash represents funds that are in the process of being settled as a result of the sale of your investment. When selling your investment, the proceeds of this sale are classified as Unsettled Cash for a period of 10 business days until they are deemed as settled (“Settlement Period”). Once the Settlement Period is complete the cash will reflect under your Settled Cash amount and will be available for withdrawal. This is in line with JSE’s Equities Rules (which dictates a T+5 settlement period) and our terms and conditions which make provision for a maximum of 10 business days for settlement.

so basically i have to wait 10 days - which by then my car settlement quote etc will no longer be valid. Does anyone know if other broker-platforms does more or less the same? (i seem to remember FNB doing something similar)

Absolutely.

With OST you have to wait 7 days. You have to remember your money is now with the JSE and it has to be requested from them. If you had money in your EE account which were just lying there you'd have gotten it the next day (I can't remember, I think it was the next day when I withrew once)

Close call
