Hi,

Hope someone can help.

Bought this Ecoflow River, but the manual says I need to completely discharge and recharge it every 3 months. Not sure how to completely discharge it. Not sure if there's a step by step way I need to do it, although I assume it's by running a couple of devices on it until flat.

If any knows how, I'd appreciate your help.

Take care

Ok obviously do this with the mains unplugged from the River.

Just plug something in that is closest to the max wattage, run it until it goes to zero. Then unplug that device and plug your River back into the mains to charge up, all done.

But I honestly don't think it's necessary, that's just me.. I mean we don't do it for our laptops or cellphones etc etc and no reviews mention that it is vital to do.

The number of cycles are indeed limited. I suspect you won't reach the max number of cycles if you don't discharge from time to time.

I'm not sure why they recommend this. Usually it is not recommended to discharge lithium ion to 0.

Most of what I've read suggests that it's best to keep them between 20 and 80%.

Probably to recalibrate the time left, indicators.
I wouldn't do it. Lithium does not have a memory effect.

That would add 1 cycle to the already meager 800 cycle life of this battery.

How lithium batteries work and what's best for them seems to be debatable at this stage. There don't appear to be any clear answers.

I don't know about the River, but the River Pro manual definitely does not have this. It only states that for long term storage you have to discharge to 30% and recharge to 60% every 3 months with the battery being at 60% for storage.

The only reason to do a full discharge would be to calibrate the SOC indicators. Or if you are using the EPS function with the unit permanently plugged in:
"In order to better make use of the EPS function, please make sure:
1. the firmware is up-to-date
2. It is recommended to disconnect every 1 month >> fully charge and discharge the unit (0~100% that's a full cycle) twice and then use EPS again"

Seems like they really do use old tech in these inverter. Also probably why the low cycles still. Would be interesting if they still suggest this in their later models.

Bluetti, also old generation, only go up to 90% of battery capacity, they shut off before you can drain the last 10%. That allows the life to be extended to >1,000 cycles.
They only say to recharge the unit if in storage for > 6 months. Also NO UPS or EPS function, they say that will degrade battery if charging and using at the same time.

These are probably limitations of LiNMC. With LiFePO you get more cycles by virtue of the improved chemistry.

The 2nd generation of the EcoFlows does have LFP batteries.

Not available in SA yet as far as I can see.

Like a cellphone, its best you dont run it down to 0.

Maybe this was a requirement in the older manual before a firmware update? Or maybe they made a mistake in the manual?

Manuals can be downloaded here:
