At the moment there really isn't anything else in this price range, certainly not in South Africa. But the phenomenal success of the Eee PC has had other manufacturers scrambling to play catch-up and while no-one seems able to match the price of the basic Eee PC you're looking at (which is generally the one available in SA), once you look at the several upgrades to the Eee now on the market overseas, there are a few other contenders. HP is weighing in with its own netbook (as these things are now tending to be called), while others are in the pipeline.
The basic Eee sold in SA has long been overtaken overseas by upgraded models -- at a price, of course. There's a 4GB basic model, and then moving up the scale there are models with 8GB or more, a 10" screen, a more powerful processor, even Windows XP. Try googling Eee PC 900 or 1000 to get some idea of what's out there, though it could be a good long while before they reach SA, so great has been the demand overseas which Asus has been working at full tilt to fulfil (they're looking to sell several MILLION this year!).
There is of course always the OLPC (one laptop per child) which is theoretically in the same price range as your 2GB Eee, but even apart from the fact they are notoriously difficult to source, there wouldn't really be any support here and you're in uncharted waters. And a wind-up laptop isn't really everyone's cup of tea.....
