Electric Bicycles

I've seen 1000w conversion kits available, if you already have a bike

and if you are really hands on, you can make your own battery

Thanks but at that prices I will have to trade in my car:ROFL:.

Yeah. Before your thread I was looking at the classifieds. Hectic.
My one mate is on a Cannondale Moterra carbon. He paid in the region of R200k for it.

This site has good e-bike reviews. Mostly ones available in the US and EU, but the decent ones often make it over.

eBike prices in SA are ridiculous though. I assume that they are not exempted from import duties. Even though they can do wonders for SA, and many millions who could use a more affordable means of transport. It's actually ridiculous the price difference between here and there.

Take this example

Custom build (many, many options), high quality ebikes - "flagship models start closer to $2,300, the new Model E has an attractive $1,699 price"

... Their flagship model starts at just over R36k... But here in SA - eBike big magic... So expensive.

Your proper eBikes in NL start at €2.500 ish (R45k+ mark) - Gazelle, VanMoof etc. Come wind, snow or wind gusts. Problem is they get stolen and insurance adds up.

In SA I'd rather get a 125cc motorcycle. It's faster, won't break and you'll look cooler. Also, it's a cheaper and petrol doesn't cost €2.15 per liter.

That's another factor.
Maybe if one could source the parts for a project like this affordably...
Who knows. Could maybe fool a few prospective appropriators.
But yeah. It's amazing how crime in our country makes progress so incredibly difficult.

I would need to get licenced, pay more taxes (I pay enough tax already) still pay tax on fuel. etc.

Get a good bike on bikehub and you will be set.

This bike was listed for R3500 at the end of 2017 and the guy that bought it later traded it for a bike I had in late 2018. I have been enjoying it since. Took me to work a good few times - and to nowhere as well...

I have sold numerous good bikes on there for reasonable prices, and rode to work and home on a bicycle for nearly a decade.

Forget e-bikes and dual-sus bikes. We're not 90 yet. My dad just turned 71 and easily rides 50km on a hardtail 1x9 29er.

There is no shower facilities at work. And I dont want to smell funky.

Thanks at E777 for a 3 battery kit. It might be a consideration.

its the most simple conversion kit I have come across and has regenerative braking, which is not very common in ebikes

Just dropping in to brag about my new baby.
This was a 10+ year dream in the making... thanks to COVID savings it finally made sense to pull the trigger.
Glad I never pulled the trigger on a Steal Bomber back in the day, these new mid-motor bikes are way nicer than the hub motor variety.

Brand new Sur Ron X.
Yes, no pedals. Basically an electric dirt bike but uses downhill MTB components on suspensions and brakes.
I'm keeping regen on for now since it works great on the road and saves brake pads.

Speed topping out at 75Km/h on the stock 60V battery (too expensive to upgrade locally to 72V, but maybe one day...).

2kWh battery with Panasonic 18650 cells, 7kW brushless motor, since wave speed controller... haven't drained it past 40% so far in one run, but usually get between 30-40KM on just less than half battery. Definitely made for offroading though, goes like stink on dirt roads, hill climbs etc.
I'm still a n00b though but can't wait to practice wheelies, jumps etc.

Takes me about 1.5 Hours to recharge on 40+ percent battery.

I just need to get a seat extender since I'm a little tall to fit comfortably on that seat.
Added a bike alarm this weekend, now I just need to find a proper chain/cable to hold it down since it only weighs about 50Kg so would be relatively easy to steal (not that I leave it outside, hell I'd sleep next to it if I could)

Future upgrades would probably be a set of 17" supermoto road wheels for most rides on the backroads on my area, also, definitely want to get a proper indicator kit etc. for safety.
