Electric Bicycles

Just dropping in to brag about my new baby.
This was a 10+ year dream in the making... thanks to COVID savings it finally made sense to pull the trigger.
Glad I never pulled the trigger on a Steal Bomber back in the day, these new mid-motor bikes are way nicer than the hub motor variety.

Brand new Sur Ron X.
Yes, no pedals. Basically an electric dirt bike but uses downhill MTB components on suspensions and brakes.
I'm keeping regen on for now since it works great on the road and saves brake pads.

Speed topping out at 75Km/h on the stock 60V battery (too expensive to upgrade locally to 72V, but maybe one day...).

2kWh battery with Panasonic 18650 cells, 7kW brushless motor, since wave speed controller... haven't drained it past 40% so far in one run, but usually get between 30-40KM on just less than half battery. Definitely made for offroading though, goes like stink on dirt roads, hill climbs etc.
I'm still a n00b though but can't wait to practice wheelies, jumps etc.

Takes me about 1.5 Hours to recharge on 40+ percent battery.

I just need to get a seat extender since I'm a little tall to fit comfortably on that seat.
Added a bike alarm this weekend, now I just need to find a proper chain/cable to hold it down since it only weighs about 50Kg so would be relatively easy to steal (not that I leave it outside, hell I'd sleep next to it if I could)

Future upgrades would probably be a set of 17" supermoto road wheels for most rides on the backroads on my area, also, definitely want to get a proper indicator kit etc. for safety.

Is that not an electric dirt bike as opposed to a downhill bike/bicycle?

Man, I'm so tempted to create a trailer with some flexible solar panels for camping/single track trips.

Have to wait though, broke my collarbone two weeks ago when I bliksemed off the Bike :(

at what point can we just call it a motorbike.

It's pretty much both if you ignore the fact that pedalling isn't really an option.
On eco mode it's not that much faster than a decent e-bike.

I have seen a few electric Mr delivery scooters around Centurion, which has pedal's as backup.
Does anybody have more details on these? since it must be road legal, i think it might be a good option (if the batteries don't die after 10 trips though...)

I've currently got 5 ebikes in the shed, 2 of which I got new and the rest I got secondhand. Secondhand bikes can be problematic with batteries and such, but in NL it's pretty easy to source parts. A couple days ago I paid €300 for an ebike for my son and it can do like 70kms on a single charge no problem.

The little bike/scooter hybrids are fun, I have this model. They're handy to take on the trains because they fold up. Legality is dubious here but I see a ton of them on the roads so I don't think they have a problem. The laws are pretty vague on these devices.

I think my next step might be to build my own ebike. There's a ton of kits out there on aliexpress and then you just get a good quality secondhand mountain bike and spend a weekend building it and you've got a monster.

Does anyone know the South African Ebike regulation, or Laws for Capetown and main city.

Not looking to ride in competitions or ride-alongs. just general leasure rides and basic cruise.

Im a heavier rider so 250W won't cut it and most of the smaller ebikes has a limit of 100kg or 120kg.

i don't wanna get something that will get me into trouble basically.

thanks
