tried getting flow through the core via the accessed pipes, core blocked solid

Could it be that lime has built up in radiator, maybe try the lemon juice thing, let it soak in and see if it doesn't break it down.

Always thought I posted an ending but anyway did end up replacing the heater matrix/core for approx R3k with labour if I remember correctly. Heater then worked great.

Have passed the car onto my bro since then.

Did you at least let the old heater core soak overnight in lemon juice? For the sake of science of course.

tbh my dad handled it as I was have to work, so he was not in the mood for my nonsense. so I never even saw the new or old core.
