Electricity crisis not over yet

You cannot save electricy, but you can limit your usage

Perhaps it is me, but I get annoyed when people keep stating that we must SAVE electricity. The choice of wording is wrong.

Look at it this way - you can save water by using less and hopefully there will be more water left in the dam for later use.
But if you do not use Electricity the very instant it is created at the Power Stations it is simply lost forever. Thus one cannot save electricity as such in the sense of storing(*) it by using less, but rather try and limit the total capacity that you use so as not to overload the National Grid at any given time of the day.
More like Load Shedding your usage.

(*) With a Battery maybe, but not for the amount of current running through the National Grid.

Tu'meytow, tu'maatow, as long as the result is lower usage.

maybe gov must also come to the saving party?

the part i love is that they keep punting these cfl's as the answer. um has anyone given any thought to the disposal of these said cfl's? From what i can gather, the majority of them contain mercury which is poisonous. Now we get a couple million of these in our landfills and our already threatened water table is shafted.

TECHNICALLY you can save electricity ;)

Eskom has a number of pumped storage schemes around the country that save up excess energy when it is available and release it during peak demand...

And the irony of you metaphor - is that Eskom uses water to do that :p

Saying that aircons is a huge factor is more than true. The average office aircon (the split unit) uses 2.5kW of power....

I see they're still blaming aircons and swimming pool pumps. The average pool pump is only 750 - 1.1kW, which is small compared to other residential loads. As for aircons, I find that the newest ones draw remarkably little power compared to other stuff again.

Our poolpump is of average size, uses 750W and to save power I only run it for 4-5 hours a day, also never in peak periods.

point taken... but electricity in SA uses coal... so it is consuming a resource.

I think it is a good initiative from Eskom to provide low energy light bulbs to the country in a desperate attempt to salvage the little bit of power that they can supply us with.

I really hope all the street lights and traffic lights around the country use CFL's. Would also be nice to accidentally run into an Eskom bulb-swapping party as I've forked out for around 20 CFL's at my own cost, and they're not cheap, the Eskom bulb-swappers are hard to find :(

At least GAME has a promo from the 18th where if you take in your old bulb you get a Cool White 15W CFL for 5 beans.. there's a bag of old ones in the garage :D

Maybe if you shouted? No really - Nobody cares right? I see our Pick n Pays down this way have set up dropoff points sponsored by Philips to handle dud CCFL bulbs. Kudos to them for that, but what are Philips planning to do with them ultimately? I recall reading an article in the press where a Govt official said they were working on a plan for safe disposal... ja right.....:(

i'm sooooo sick and tired of hearing about this energy crisis bull****
we cant save anymore cant they understand that!!!
and plus the country is ever getting bigger, more people are using more stuff that uses more electricity!!! Gosh

blah blah blah blah blah

sigh...

hmmm...luckily i bought my inverter...
but really..if you have little food on your table, would you take it and give it to your neighbours?

Eskom is still selling electricity to our neighbours

BS

whats been done about the illegal connections that have been repeatedly reported, whats been done about the street lights that burn 24 hours a day and you tell us to save, GET LOST:mad:

Eskom is not selling to neighbours anymore. There is a contract (prepaid) that is in the process of being settled. The amount of electricity involved in the contract is not enough to "save us in the event of loadshedding).

@ian44
It is the municipality's responsibility to investigate any electricity issues within a municipal area, such as lights being on 24/7.
Eskom is investigating reports about stolen electricity (example being farmer steals power directly from the powerline (very stupid but possible with the know-how)).

And this is where everything runs dead, the corrupt municipalities.
