New rules for all electronics in South Africa

All electrical and electronic devices in South Africa that do not have radio frequency modules must have valid electromagnetic compatibility certificates recognised by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS).

This comes after the SABS and Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) were met with criticism after they tried to implement a new compliance regime in 2017.

Everyday parliament passes new and updated laws rushed overnight but we are still waiting for cannabis regulations three years after decriminalization. Elon Musk has a great take on how laws should work he compares it to software updates where if the law is not renewed it should be recinded and it should be easier to invalidate laws than to pass them.

Because it is still illegal to shake your doormat before 8am in London.

Was speaking to SABS at an event pre.covid. They failed to renew the water meter standard in time, so effectively for several months there was no legal water meter standard in South Africa....

We are led!

Seriously?! Just about every device then needs a SABS certificate. Looking at the product list its laughable.
It's crazy, there's an image of a fuse on the pdf as well as a fire sprinkler and unless I'm very much mistaken a fire sprinkler had absolutely nothing to do with electricity

Its crazy to expect logic from the Ruling Party and their deployed cronies across the various government bodies.

So how's this going to affect imports of electronics and similar goods? Will you guys get your kindles stopped by SARS when ARAMEX tries to bring them in, asking for certificates of compliance?

Thankfully they didn't force everyone to turn them off and just live off the dew.

Sorry, all I read was "CoC".
I giggled.
I am a child.

As far as aware this only applies if the product(s) will be used for commercial purposes or industrial equipment, additionally certain equipment or machinery already comes with compliance certificates, and generally you can request such certificate directly from the manufacture if needed, and be presented on request. This is usually requested during the clearance process at sars. For average joe it is business as usual.
