Elementary OS vs Windows 8

Thanks :)

My new favourite text editor is Sublime Text 3. Super easy to set up on my Ubuntu 15.04 machine. Erm, it's closed source but free hehe. Check it out.

Been using sublime for years

Using it via notepadreplacer when I'm not in inux.

I love windows, but not the disaster that was windows 8...

You and me both :sic: I'm not impressed with Win10. I'm gonna wipe every trace of Windows crap off my main HD tonighT and replace it with Elementary OS/Debian Jessie

It's so fast and highly customizable. I've set up my remote git repo to store my personal ST3 user settings.

Neat^^

This is totally against the spirit of the Linux community.
Where does it say people cannot make money off Linux?
If donations are asked for then it is mentioned rather than having a paywall in place. It is probably possible to specify a zero payment, but I decided that was I was not interested anymore.
Ever tried downloading Red Hat or SUSE?

What's wrong with Linux? I'd say it's far superior to Windows 8 (particularly) in terms of stability, security and speed.

I find personally that my workflow is far faster under Windows than Ubuntu. Shotwell just isn't that fantastic for me and Chromium flat refuses to allow auto scrolling to work. I will take the time later to see what else is out there, but several things just don't work as I expected. Picasa might fit the bill, but it annoyed the hell out of me when I used it in place of GIMP for smaller, quick edits a while ago.

Hello guys,

So recently I downloaded and installed Elementary OS, I do not have to much experience with linux so I was just wondering is there any reason at all why I should not format my pc and install Elementary as my primary OS and replace windows.

Been playing around in it for a few hours now and I can say my preference of Debian and Mint has been unchanged. Its ok, but imho mint and debian is still better...

I hate the slow speed of using the debian based package management, I can't let go of arch's pacman, best package manager ever.

dude... custom amount and insert 0? was it that hard?

As stated in my original post.

There is nothing saying that people can not make money out of Linux. My objection is that they are asking money for something that was developed almost entirely by someone else, namely the Debian project and Canonical.

With Red Hat you can download CentOS, which is free. CentOS is sponsered by Red Hat, who also own the trademarks and employ the devs. SUSE on the other hand is more of a problem.

Elementary isn't just a skin for Ubuntu, it includes an entirely different desktop environment that looks nothing like Unity, or Gnome, or most of the other DEs out there. The developers put a lot of work into eOS and they don't waste time bundling slightly newer versions of applications and OS updates every so often for a rolling release that's only a little different from the previous version. Considering that a lot of Linux contributors do not get paid for their contribution to the OSS community (you have to attribute some kind of value to the work they're doing), I'd say that asking for donations up-front, even for just one Dollar, is fine by me.

AFAIK, the GPL licenses give them free reign to charge for their work, so that's what they choose to do.

Also,

No Ads. No Spying.

We don't make advertising deals and we don't collect sensitive personal data. Our only income is directly from our users.

Canonical can't offer you the same deal out of the box. They're collecting money on your search terms until you opt out of the service.

The issue of where income for a Linux distribution, as opposed to maintenance support, is attributable is a contentious one. An advantage of the Linux ecosystem is the amount of choice that allows each individual to pick the distribution that suits them best. Some even go for fully open distributions only.

The way that Canonical collects information seems to have damaged their reputation. Even though it is possible to turn this off or use another spin it has alienated a lot of people.

Not that I've noticed - in fact Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 seems (and boots) faster than Fedora 21 on equivalent hardware.

... this coming from a diehard Fedora/Centos user :)

Sweet cause currently I am loving Elementary, but I am more accustomed to Rhel commands

Out of curiosity I went to their site to download and try it. The first thing that they asked was for my email address and credit card number for payment. Clicking another option resulted in them asking for my phone number.

The clincher was their blog post, where they state "an entire operating system that has taken years of development and refinement is worth funding". This OS is a derivative of Ubuntu, but they don't mention how much of the money will passed on to Canonical (I suspect none).

As was said you enter 0 and move along.

Ubuntu is exactly the same and has been doing this for years.

Considering they are based on Ubuntu probably just followed their logic.

Some really beautiful desktops but I'm more of a "maximum performance" than a "maximum appearance" person. Hence, my favourite distro is Lubuntu.

I've actually communicated with the Elementary OS devs before as I wanted to do some bug fixing. It's a very clean OS and good community.

Just know what the shortcomings of each distro are before making it primary. Rather, install on VirtualBox and use it for a month.

From my experience, certain devices require certain kernels. So make sure your devices are supported.

BTW - I've been duel booting since Ubuntu 3 :wtf:

To be honest the reason why I have this as my primary OS is because I accidentally formatted my pc in the installation I hate Linux's way of showing harddrives and stuff it's nothing like a windows based installation so I fcked up.

LOL praise the gods you didn't have to work druid back in the day :D

Because of this I still prefer Luna to Freya.... maybe I'm just used to Luna. Hell, I find Luna's login screen more elegant and inviting.

Had a lab I needed to image, very low spec PCs (XP was bearable). I tried Ubuntu 14.04 but those PCs suffered. Threw Mint XFCE at them and they capably handled workloads. Funnily enough, when I tried Luna afterwards, they felt like newly purchased PCs. Freya.... performance is suffering slightly, now they're equivalent to Mint XFCE's level. And its not specific to those lab pcs, even on my Sandybridge i5 lappy the perf difference between Luna and Freya is apparent. It could just be that Freya's a RC right now iirc.

Well, doesn't matter anyway, I need to be on the latest LTS as I've less time for tinkering.
