Modified sine has no effect on any electronics with a switching power supply

But what you are NOT saying is that very few electronics come with Auto switching power supplies (ASPSU).

But you knew that right? They are generally more expensive. And in a consumer society - the manufacturers aren't going to fit expensive PSUs into inexpensive electronics.

Pure sinewave is the best route to go. But you are welcome to "blow up" your NAD hi fi expensive LED TV etc...

Modified sine wave output is square wave output = higher harmonic distortion - that buzzing sound on your NAD hi fi running off your modified sine wave inverter.

Modified sine wastes more power - due to loss in equipment PSUs. So the actual benefit you are are getting from your standby power battery bank is less efficient.

Pure sine wave is the same wave form as the power supplied by your power company. Less harmonic distortion - less chance of damage to sensitive electronics less loss of power in electronics PSUs. Clean power.

Pure sine wave output comes at a premium cost though - and that is the obstacle for most consumers.

Not the fact that its a better solution and provides cleaner power, the problem is the price tag.
So consumers rather opt for modified sine wave.

Some even run line interactive UPS systems as extended time standby power sources, dirty and cheap - but not ideal. And your line interactive UPS wont last long....

So I guess its a matter of how much you really want to spend on protecting your expensive electronics in your home.

I think you are mixing up Switchmode Power Supplies with ASPSU's, it's 2 different things altogether.
Today all LED TV's, all computers, most Audio equipment and even the new digital fridges use switchmode power supplies.

Now you're just talking nonsense, pretty much any electronic device has a switching power supply... The only things that won't is older equipment and possibly computer PSU's if they have an input voltage selector switch. Modified sine will not "blow up" anything, although the buzz is a slight possibility if you're amplifier is crap.

Yes pure sine is better, but modified sine does the job and won't damage anything(except inductive loads, motors etc). Pure is not worth the price difference even if you can afford it...

What beats me is why are Pure Sine Wave inverters so much more expensive.
The only difference is a few transistors and parts to make up the filtering.
Some now use a single IC which does everything for you.
I think SA suppliers are on a band wagon as 'Pure' has become a buzz word with inverters.
 
My Samsung LCD TV Buzzed on a modified inverter. It has now packed up and the quote to repair it crazy. For an extra grand get a sine wave and don't risk your stuff.

Yes I read about your problem else where.
My old LCD also used a linear PSU and caused a buzz on my modified inverter, was 7 years old.
I sold the LCD Tv and bought a new LED 55" job and it works like a dream.
 
This Ellies inverter seems like a pretty good deal.

Have to agree that sine wave is not a must (square wave is fine for many things).

When a company sells a "pure sine" 3kW inverter at R30k (aka Victron), someone is clearly out of their minds to pay that.

Doesn't matter if the Ellies inverter only lasts a year. You are waaay ahead.

Unlike what others say Victron is not some magical brand that will last forever. Even if it is, in about 5 years from now it will be dated.

Personally I think the Axpert is the best compromise so far between price and quality.

Ellies 1200w inverter

Hi ... I bought the 1200w Ellies inverter recently... can I use one 12v battery to pOwer 55 inch LED, Dstv Explora and Telkom Adsl?

Also advise where I can buy the trolley or battery cabinet

I think the 1200W are 24V so you would need 2 batteries connected in Series to work on that one.
As for cabinet or Trolley they available everywhere but cheaper to use one of those Big jim / Addis Plastic boxes or make one
As for what you want to put on it yep it will be more then sufficient to run all of that.
 
Just hooked up my 1200w Ellies inverter, 2 batteries.

Am running 2 pc's and monitors, switch, firewall, router, voip phone, wireless router, Apple tv and plasma tv - drawing around 320W.

If I turn off the tv the draw drops to half. Now I know where my electricity has gone.

how can you be drawing just 320w with 2 pcs + monitors ? Are those pc's in use when you testing your load ?

Huge difference between LCD & LED monitors btw. I'm stuck with a 46" LCD drawing more than the 200W my inverter can handle. My 24" LED though draws very little. But I'm not going to replace my 46" it still works well. Just not during load shedding :(.
 
I also noticed the big difference between LCD and LED monitors, especially if it's a Green (ECO) LED monitor.
Bought a 32 inch ECO Green Samsung TV set come monitor and it only uses 22 watts when set to max ECO.
In fact my SD-PVR draws more than the TV set :)
Recently bought a Hisense 55 inch Smart TV and it only uses 81 watts with audio at 75%
My old 47" LCD alone used 310 watts........ that I swapped for a 1200 watt Microwave :)
 
Yeah I sold my Sony Bravia 2 40" to another guy who uses it in his kid's room. Used the money and some ebucks to buy a new LED TV. Runs tons better on the inverter and also uses a lot less power. Down from 230w to 40w for the TV alone.
