Ellies Inverters

My experience has been that Ellies is a low-budget cheap and nasty brand. If you're going to buy an inverter rather buy one from a reputable manufacturer.

got the 600w had it for about 3 months no issues at all

Ahh great, that is the one I'm thinking of getting.

1. Does the UPS part work ok, in other words when the mains fails, the Inverter takes over instantly and when the mains comes back the inverter switches back ?

2. Can you switch the through put off without removing the mains ?
In other words when Eskom is on, I don't want the battery to stop charging but there must be no electricity coming out of the inverter.

I currently run a 300 watter with no problems but I need that UPS option :)

1. yes you dont even notice, besides the fan coming on.
2. Yes, if i understand your question properly

Inverter works fine - the batteries that Makro and Builders sell for it are **** though. Not many charge cycles before you must replace it.

One issue is if your power coming in is crappy, then the inverter power is "better" and trips xbox console. Had to have CityPower come fix my line....

Personally from years of experience I find the cheap and nasty stuff out lasts the 'good' stuff and cost half as much to maintain. :)

That one looks the same as a Mecer which I believe have a very loud fan that drives you crazy.
Basically I thinks it's where it's the most convenient to buy from.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm dilly already listening to that fan :) I think the Ellies one will be better quality than the Mecer or the one from takealot.

Modified sine wave.

Don't be surprised if your electronics starts packing up after a year or two .....

Seen that before and wondered if it will really would work ... why do you want to convert it ?
Just for the fun of it as I have all the time in the world (retired)
Maybe make a kit for all to use... who knows :)
Most people seem to have a thing about a pure sinewave inverter. :)

Modified sine wave.

You obviously do not know much about electronic circuitry :)
My current Ellies Inverter has been going for 2 odd years and we have more mains outages here in Hilton than anywhere else in the country.

No what ?

Or are you going to say but all switch more power supplies converts the AC input to DC , so modified sine wave doesn't matter?

Modified sine has no effect on any electronics with a switching power supply(can handle a range of voltages), modified sine only results in a higher RMS going through the transformer circuitry which it can easily handle as the heat dissipation is designed to cope with double the amps(half the voltage) for use in America. The power going into your device is sorted out by the transformer.

Americans might have an issue using 110V and modified sine but we won't

For a 2 or 4 hour load shed all you want is your PC, your TV, your DSTV decoder and a few lights to work and therefore a simple 600 watt modified sinewave inverter is more than what you'll ever need.
All those devices have switchmode power supplies that run from 55 volts to 290 volts.
If you have an old type CRT or LCD TV with a linear power supply you'll probably hear a buzz in the audio, and I agree you could damage the TV in time.
If you decide to go off the grid, then yes, I agree, a pure sign wave inverter with all the bells and whistles is a must.
Regarding the Internet also, Telkom DSLAMs have a battery up time of 6+ hours whereas their new MSANs only last 30 minutes in some cases so even the Internet is no attraction during a load shed anymore :(

Very true about the Yanks ScottulusMaximus :)

Ellies buys and brands their inverters from a good factory in China.

I bought a few OEM ( pure sine wave ) samples from Prostar that claimed to also source from where Ellies sources.

Prostar doesn't deal with crap, so imo Ellies got decent stuff. But time will tell...
