and data doesn't take the same amount of time to travel through 1 km of cable compared to 8000 km of cable - you are talking milliseconds of time but it still makes a difference

you also have to consider the amount of bandwidth which is rented by your connecting company on the international cable - you have to share that with every other south african who is also getting international content and the entire international bandwidth isn't available - only the portion that is rented by your connecting company

there are so many different things you have to consider when getting data internationally
do a tracert to the server and any of the servers that you get a response from could be having a problem which would result in slower speeds

Do you work for them perhaps? How can this be the case if downloading the same file from the same server but using different ISPs results in such dramatically different speeds? The only difference being that the connection is going through a different ISP.

oh wow ok sorry mate, but your information is no better than the afrihost support guy. You are seriously misinformed.

let me correct your information and example in simple terms.

Using the example of highways, you are saying that it doesn't take the same amount of time to travel 1km as it does to travel 8000km. Yes _this_ is correct, there is a TIME difference but this has nothing to do with speed. The original poster is no complaining about the TIME (which is latency), he is complaining about the speed.

What you mention above is like trying to apply the logic of saying that if you travel on a highway, you can travel 120km/hour for 1km, but you can't for 8000km. Well actually you can. Yes time wise it will take a while to travel 8000km, but it won't affect your speed on the highway.

So in summary:
Distance only affects latency and has absolutely no bearing on the speed of which data can travel.

Secondly, data does not travel through DNS servers. DNS servers merely issue the IP addresses for a domain name or ptr record. When data travels over the internet, it doesn't do DNS lookups for each router it passes through. Yes your traceroute program does DNS lookups, but you can turn that off on a traceroute query.

awww dammit man! i just bought 15gigs the other day and so regretting it hey!!!! latency is TERRIBLE esp in gaming - sites take forever to load RUBBISH!
 
The reason why the international sites are slower is mainly due to the fact that it has to move the data over +- 8 000KM of cabling.

Mwwwaaaaa hhaaaaaa haaaaaa...does he think the speed of electronics is like the speed of sound :D

i don't know where you are getting your logic from but if you want to follow the example of the highway

it is agreeable that the distance doesn't make a difference for speed but the distance does make a difference to the chance of congested points on your route
and the amount of time to travel to your destination

take for example from joburg to durban on a clear highway with only you it would take so long but there could be traffic on the route out of joburg and then clear and then traffic at the toll points
all that affects your speed

the distance factor is like travelling from joburg to durban compared to joburg to cape town
they would take a different amount of time to travel to

So in summary:

our download speeds are measured at Kb or Mb per second
so if it takes 1 second to get the information compared to 3 seconds because its a further distance there will be a speed difference

First off my sincere apologies regarding the poor response you received from us.

I do not know the exact specifics of the problem you experienced - From what I can understand from our guy's reply is that you experienced slow download speeds from an international site while using our Capped ADSL.

Our Capped ADSL is unshaped - Our clients thus get the maximum speed that IS and our client's landline and local ADSL exchange can deliver at that time.*

Our guy's reply was not ideal as he did not clearly explain what the problem was, nor make any suggestions as to what you could do to improve your speeds.

One of the biggest challenges with any growing company is ensuring that the level of support given to our clients remains world class despite the challenges that growth and the influx of new personnel brings.*

Constant training needs to be (and is) a top priority. However, as with all things there are times we drop the ball and whenever this happens I take full responsibility for it - I promise that we are constantly trying to improve on the status quo - both in support and in the products that we deliver.*

When we fall short of our dream we see where we can improve and then make sure we do better the next time.

As you know with an ADSL connection there are a myriad of variables which affect download speed: The actual server you're accessing the information from, the network that server resides on, the network path that the information takes to get back to you, your provider and their network availability, your ADSL exchange and line, your router and your computer.

In this case our guy seems to be trying to explain that the server our client was accessing could be busy which would affect speed and the fact that international downloads are generally slower than local due to the fact that they have to go through many more routers or 'hops' and this can affect latency and speed.

He could have without doubt explained this far better and also tried to pinpoint the exact problem better I.e. If our clients was experiencing decent download speeds from other international servers then this would point to the problem being specific to the network or server that our client was downloading from.

Woa Gian Posting again??? Welcome back. An Afrihost presence on MyBB is much needed. Hopefully you will now listen to your customers (I am as of today oficially not an Afrihost customer) and try to keep them happy. Your company has been ridiculed (sometimes unjustifiably so) and no one responded.

all data DOES NOT travel through the DNS server.

IF you're using a hostname and not an IP then there is an initial lookup to find out what the IP of the destination machine is.
Once that initial lookup is done, it is cached and not done again.
The DATA take as direct a path as possible to the destination.

The DATA does not go through the DNS server.
(DNS server could be in China and the physical server in the US, Data goes direct to US, not via China (unless that's the way you're connected to the world, but we're not))

Please tell me you don't actually work in IT?

If I connect to someone using his IP address - why would my data go through a DNS server, and exactly which DNS server does it decide its going through?

A simple analogy would be a telephone book - I need to phone Koos Kombuis, I don't have his phone number, I open the phone book and search for Koos Kombuis, I get the phone number.. I close the phone book and make the call.

I don't need to hold the phone book to my ear to make the call.

Please confirm you actually have no clue on the topic before actually posting.

i will admit i should not have used "all data" i should have used "communication"
if you are communicating with a server you have to request the IP address of that server from a DNS server unless you already know it

just because you have someones telephone number doesn't mean you know how to get there.
you have to consider that the IP address could be anywhere in the world - a DNS server firstly translates the name to an IP address which is all that it does

your first initial communication with the server would ask the DNS server to do a lookup from there that lookup is kept in memory locally until it expires

but your device needs to refer to that lookup before it sends the data or starts the communication

there aren't only DNS servers on the data route. there are many devices that data needs to pass through to get to where it needs to go

i just used the DNS server because it was easier than listing every device and discussing what every device does

exactly which DNS server does it decide its going through?

thats determined by you or your ISP
if you look at your network settings you set your DNS server

if you don't know what and how DNS servers work please don't question whether someone does or does not work in IT

I know perfectly well how DNS servers work, something you have continually proven to lack knowledge off - if you are communicating by IP address, your ISP won't be deciding what DNS server to use, as you won't be using a DNS server.

I'm not the one who claimed "ALL DATA" goes through DNS servers - telling someone else they are wrong, when they were WAY more correct than you... So I will again ask, please tell me you don't work in IT.
