Email form Afrihost explaining my slow speeds

Thanks rpm,

I've been moved up to a 6MB line recently and although I know speeds differ during the day, when I tried downloading a upgrade version for my Blackberry from the Blackberry website, I only got 38Kb/s. This persisted for 4 hours from 5pm to 9pm. Where Webafrica Local was giving me between 450Kb/s and 550Kb/s.

I can't seem to find my "ticket" now on their website, (if anyone can be able to help me with that), but I basically informed them (after 8pm last night) that international speeds is much slower than local speeds. That I'm on the R29 gig service and I am aware of shaping on the uncapped side, but wasn't aware of it on the 1Gig service.

Their response

Good day *******

I trust that you are well.:)

No the capped account are unshaped. The reason why the international sites are slower is mainly due to the fact that it has to move the data over +- 8 000KM of cabling. Further more that is an international server, so it can get very busy as well, seeing as the rest of the world is most likely getting their updates from there as well. So if there are another 200 people trying to get the same update from the server it will to busy to give every one full speed.

Have a great day & please feel free to let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Warm regards.

Steyn

Did he try to sell you some snake oil too?

Its a pity you mentioned a particular site though, since I would guess this affects all international bandwidth and not just your black berry update.

That seems like the explanation my dad would give, and he doesn't know how to turn the computer on. That person sounds completely incompetent, as cruel as that may sound. It's slower because it has to travel further?

Well he made me felt like a completely incompetent as if I was some old gullible granny sitting at home.

Rofl what a lame reply - did u mention that you where getting 500kB/sec on WA to him?

Edit: In the same location

Next time I suggest you telepathically log onto the server, that way all that kilometers of nasty wire wont be slowing you down

When all else fails... blame the Internet. lol. NO mention of edge servers or the fact that BIS updates are hosted in a scalable cloud.

That I can't remember, I just phoned Afrihost and only they can see my query on their side.

I'm nearly 100% sure, I mentioned my local speed are much higher!

Ask Afrihost to use a shorter cable to your house.... tell them you're in the same country.

Does Gian still post here?
Afrihost support used to be around here a lot, responding to queries, etc.. and obviously having the CEO around usually keeps things running smoothly.

These days (I assume since their weird uncapped solutions) I don't see much more relating to Afrihost than complaint after ridicule after complaint... what gives?
Or am I not reading closely enough?

Tell Afrihost that the problem is that the 1m of cable they use to connect their backbone to Telkom is too thin, the other +- 7999 kilometers of cable is thick enough, thank you very much :D

lol.

Afrihost. Look, you get idiots everywhere. But I guess if you pay peanuts you get monkeys doing support.
