Ok Ive had this problem for over a year now and I've tried to tackle it on various occasions without much sucess. Any advise would be appreciated.

The problem
Part 1: Sending email - If I send email (with a jpg attachement and in HTML form) from my telkomsa.net domain to a few recipients (say 5), at least 2 of them dont get my attachement. In fact it seems the email has been re-written in .txt format and now has a .dat attachement that cant be opened (the .dat file size is the same as the .jpg file I originally sent). I have noticed that it seems to happen when I send to certain domains (vigin.net and optus.com.au amoungst others). Others get the attachement fine.

Part 2:Receiving email - If I recieve an email with an attachement of any type from bhpbilliton.com in particular. The original HTML Email has been converted to TXT format with a confidentiallity thing on it and the original mail (txt format) is attached.....the word, jpg, pdf attachment is nowhere to be seen. If the bhpbilliton people send me the same mail (.jpg attached) to my telkomsa.net mail address and CC my hotmail address, my hotmail address displays the mail perfectly with the JPG, the Telkom address displays it in text as above, no attachement.

Part 3:Trouble shooting - I created a email alias eg [email protected] and for a short while I received the mails perfectly on that address. In fact doing the CC thing to [email protected] and [email protected], original was txt and test2 was perfect

Part 4:]My conclusions -
On receiving mail it cannot be somthing to do with MS Outlook (HTML) as the test in part 3 disproves that.
It occurs on both PC's at home and even when I access my email via my N95 Nokia
This seems to be a spamming filter thing with BHPBILLITON or Telkom for receiving mails
As for sending mails - the two above mentioned domains must have Telkomsa.net as a spammers address or somthing.....why do they get .DAT files from me.
I called telkom internet today to ask them if they had another domain that I could use for my mails (other than telkomsa.net) in the hopes that the other domain is not registered as spamming etc. Well I have a REF....and they will call me.....yeah right!

Any Ideas on this problem?

Log on to telkomsa.net at the Webmail option with your details, look to see if Spam filtering is enabled on the account or not, there are also spam filtering options which "rewrite" the content of the email.

Best to use Gmail IMO ;)

And it's not just the domain that is checked for in spam filtering. Many systems employ a points system. Points are allocated for specific characteristics of spam that a mail may possess. If the number of points that a mail scores is above a certain (specified) threshold, the mail is flagged as spam.

I went onto webmail and basically reduced disabled whatever I could but the mail stil comes in re-writen on webmail itself....not with the traditional *SPAM* header

I think GMAIL might be my only option here!

It's best to use Gmail, I don't see why, with the existence of gmail that anybody would want to use an ISP email service? ;)

Well, I have just had the most helpfull Telkom specialist working through proving this fault with me.:):):):):):)

I had refused a reference number after they lost the first one and I demanded to speak to a manager or specialist -they put me through. This guy has been testing and working on my mail since 08h00 today, he phones me every half an hour to let me know what he has found....WHAT A BREATH OF FRESH AIR - Stephan YOU ROCK! :D

He has proved that my mail address is blacklisted on certain servers....the saga IS being worked on! Seriously, the "Kelly temps" that answer the phones are what give a very bad first impression of Telkom. After speaking to Manger and then the Specialist they really showed that they too want to sort my problems out.

http://mail.google.com/mail/signup ... seriously :)

I can highly recommend it--for your future use. It will save you time and energy later on. There is even talk of Gmail integrating Google Gears which will enable you to browse your Gmail offline.

Otherwise, you can just setup IMAP with Outlook.

Change your browser to Opera. It's THE most stable browser I've ever used, with a BUILD IN email client.
