I got an SMS apparantly from Vodacom saying they would like to send my monthly statement by email, and to reply to the SMS with my email address.

1) If I reply to this SMS, who pays?
2) Vodacom already has my email address at least twice, on my contract application and on vodacom4me. So why are they asking for it again?

Has anybody else got this SMS?

Is it really Vodacom that sent the sms, or just some spammer pretending to be Vodacom, and waiting for you to pay to send your email address to them & then spam both your inboxes? Can you post the entire [minus any of your personal details] sms including timesamp?

Yes, but why should I pay to send an SMS to Vodacom to save them money for a service that I didn't even want in the first place?

ic, I'm fairly sure that the SMS really is from Vodacom, I'll gladly post it if V3G doesn't confirm this.

Where was Vodacom's concern for the trees when they forced millions of people to pay for itemized billing that they didn't want or require?

:D :D :D :D So true!

i got it and called Vodacom customer care. They didnt know anything about it and they were going to get back to me to confirm it was Vodacom. Needless to say, as is the norm in Sloth Africa's telecoms industry, they didnt.

So stuff them. Ive been having a nightmare with Vodacoms GPRS service all week and with no joy from support im not exactly mad about Vodacom at all right now. So scuse the arsy response.

Won't you please post or PM the complete message with originating number.

Neither I nor anyone in my family received it, so it might be from a specific service provider.

Those of you who received it; with which SP is your account?

This is what I got:

from +278200703031000

Hi Michael, Vodacom would like to deliver your monthly bill by interactive email. Please reply with your email address.

Now upon further reflection, this is what Vodacom should have done:
1) Given me this message in my monthly bill, in print. They send me half a tree a month anyways.
2) SMS me information on how I can visit the website and sign up for this service.
3) Inform me if I will stil get monthly statements by post and also what the additional charges are for emailed statements (nothing is free even if it costs much less, right?)

i also got one of those:

+2782007000298965
"Dear Client, Vodacom wishes to send your monthly bill via email. Reply with your email address for this free service and youcould WIN a NOKIA 9300!"

Well i could change that setting [where/how to receive my monthly statement] via Vodacom's website [At the time it was VodacomSP.com [which worked] , now i assume its integrated with Vodacom4me [which usually malfunctions in some way, so i can't tell you where exactly to do it now as i can't get into my account details ;/ ].

2) SMS me information on how I can visit the website and sign up for this service.

My first thought too. I would prefer a secure scenario where i can at least change/revert ...sometimes sending a correct email address via SMS can be tricky ;)/ Sounds a bit dodgy considering we're not talking newsletters here.

Anyway i haven't received such an SMS, but ive been receiving my bills via email for awhile now [i no longer get any paper versions posted to me [also a setting on the site] ].

Please don't respond to these SMS's until I can confirm their origin. What worries me is the different text in the two SMS's as well as the different originating numbers.

Can you guys please confirm with which SP your account is?

My SP is Vodacom SP. I got the nokia 9300 SMS.

and today i got a email from vodacom stating :

So i downloaded the crypter tool... Why do i need to install software to get my online bill ? - isnt this a little stupid - more useless software on my pc ???

What was the URL of the Ecrypt 2005 link?

Either this is a scam, or, if this is kosher, Vodacom has been incredibly irresponsible. "Hi, I don't know your name, but I am Vodacom. Please download and install this software on your PC!"

ABSA do it too with their monthly statements, although their decrypter tool is only 50KB , [checked the vodacom one, it's also only 115KB, might be similar thing].
Although ABSA's tool got my ID as the encryption key [so they encrypt using my id number which they obviously must know] .

Granted, Banking details probably should be handled carefully, debatable how secure my phone bill needs to be though ;)

would love Vodacom's take on this... Why Encrypt your vodacom bill or are they scared some sort of virus will scan the phone numbers ???
