emailed monthly statements

would love Vodacom's take on this... Why Encrypt your vodacom bill or are they scared some sort of virus will scan the phone numbers ???

Probably because your phone records are personal and confidential, and should the mail go missing in cyberspace (or something else happens to it) and land up in the wrong "hands" who knows how much damage could be done?

Identity theft is real these days, we've all heard or seen stories about it, and telephone records just make it that much easier for a someone to assume your "identity" and especially in cyberspace where on can do business and interact with people/businesses without even leaving your PC...

That's my personal take anyways, may not be Vodacom's, but I have been using the e-billing service for sometime now, and find it very convenient, and easy to use, plus I'll be doing my bit for the rain forrests too

V3G, is this SMS and download really from Vodacom? Who is emc and why do they have no track record? Why are Vodacom acting indistinguishably from cyber-crooks, enticing downloads without proving who they are? Please post the source code of the program that Vodacom is asking people to install on their PCs.

Sun - get your facts str8 - he knows nothing about the software, he's finding out if its legit. so i would strongly suggest you retract your statement!.

I think you thought I was attacking V3G personally and I have edited my post to make my meaning clearer, replacing "you" with "Vodacom". Does it make more sense now? (My post assumes that V3G will eventually establish that this IS a Vodacom initiative, which is obviously what you think too, since you installed the software/spyware?. If this is a scam then it is an unusually slick one.)

EMC - E-mail Connection, part of the Bidvest group, have a look at www.emc.co.za, they do the e-billing services for Woolworths, Edgars, Multichoice, some Local municipalities, etc so they definately do have some sort of track record.

As for the software, it's just a decoder to read their encrypted e-mails, not Spyware, so nothing sinister about it:eek:

Maybe you watch too many movies? :D

Actually considering what Sony did with their rootkit [which blew up in their faces and i'm sure the lawsuits will be starting soon] , it's not that far fetched to question these little apps we need to install to do stuff. Even if it does not do anything bad itself , it can still open a backdoor to something really bad [as with the Sony app] .

more unsolicited sms's for e-mail address

My wife also got one of these messages. I am with Vodacom SP.
Message:

Dear Client, Vodacom wishes to send your monthly bill via email. Reply with your email address for this free service and you could WIN a NOKIA 9300!

Obviously we didn't respond! How do one differentiate between SPAM and genuine sms's?
No, this should have been sent first via the monthly account.

I don't think this came from Vodacom as it is extremely unprofessional to solicit personal information via an sms and as already stated in previous posts, extremely confusing as nobody seems to be aware of it at Vodacom.

As previously posted by diabolus, the emc decryption s/w is used by ABSA customers for their Credit Card statements [decryption key is ID#], but CellC have also used the same for quite a while now with their emailed statements.

There are a number of SARS requirements for electronic Tax Invoices, one of which is secure transmission, and IMO that's where the encrypted attachment stems from. Having said that, SARS has a daft notion that you should only be able to access an original electronic Tax Invoice '1-time' and thereafter subsequent access must reflect 'Copy of Tax Invoice' as if that would stop anyone from taking an original paper Tax Invoice to the photocopier & running off 1000 more 'originals'...the main requirement is to have a unique invoice number combined with VAT Registration number would make the other 1000 'originals' redundant copies but SARS decided to go off on a nonsensical tangent with electronic Tax Invoices...

Apologies for resurrecting this thread, but I have just received an SMS like this.

"Vodacom would like to deliver your statement by email. Please reply with your email address."

No name, nothing else. Reading the previous posts, I will definitely not be replying to this.

EDIT: I am on Vodacom SP, Topup 315.

I've been using it for a while now. It's very easy and convenient. When you are finished in your browser, you just click ok on the encryption software, which also deletes the info from your browser cache.

Let me check on this.

I also got one of these a while back, but did not reply to the SMS [despite actually wanting invoices via email] bcos:
  1. I don't know if it actually came from Vodacom and I don't even bother giving out a disposable email addy if I'm uncertain of the source & legitimacy; and
  2. I don't know what I would be charged for sending an email addy via reply-SMS.
I probably still have the SMS if needed.

You can always forward the SMS you got to my mobile. Just spoke to some people and they'll trace this first thing in the morning.

Details of the SMS I received:

Vodacom would like to deliver your bill in an interactive email, please reply with your email address.
I assume that forwarding the SMS would not preserve the sender's number, however the SMS I received is from the same sender number that ebendl got, although the text has changed slightly.

They seem to be legit, but I'm talking to the senders on the proper use of English, grammar and sentence construction.
LOL, I think the grammar etc is acceptable, but perhaps it is too abrupt - leaving no room for a number to call for verifcation of the true source of the SMS - I have previously asked the accounts dept via 111 about receiving my invoices via email and the operator at the time didn't know what I was talking about.

emailed invoice

If one chose the emailed option compared to the mailed option, will Vodacom give us discount? The only benefit there is is that they get the invoices out cheaper.

The cell phone companies rip of clients big time will call charges and data packages, so at least let them pay the cost to get your invoice to you.:D
