[Emburst] R480 uncapped???? OMW!!

I have a friend using it at Harties, line of site setup. It works but averages +- 272kbits/sec, 34kbytes/sec. A lot better than dial-up. It is connectivity, better than nothing, I suppose. Fixed wireless? this is well said.

Emburst up and running

Hi all

Just had Emburst installed.

Total setup cost came to R4500 (Special setup as we are behind a hill)
Monthly business package uncapped R650 p/m

I have to say that so far Im really impressed (bearing in mind Im compaing this to my last connection which was gprs :D)

Download speed was on average 30kb\sec
Web pages load nice and fast.

I pinged www.google.com and got the following results

Reply from 66.249.93.147: bytes=32 time=783ms TTL=239
Reply from 66.249.93.147: bytes=32 time=780ms TTL=239

Reply from 66.249.93.147: bytes=32 time=792ms TTL=239

Im not very technical, so if theres anything you'd like mw to test let me know

Thanks

Translation: They had to install an Amp on my end to get it to work.

Well done emburst, proving once again that you're Just Another WISP

...and they still don't have a proper website?

I would be ashamed to have my name at website design on their contacts page with a site like that.... how long can a simple site like that be "Under Construction"?

Anything is better than GPRS or Analogue dial up, for sure.
I am sure if you went to Poynting who provides antennae's they would have been able to supply you with an antennae to use 3G etc. I did not read the whole thread, where are you located?

In other words, and plain language... Do not believe anything that is within this web site, although they keep refering you to it when you run into problems with them..:( and WOW it has a "Home " button !

Btw they have changed their web site, since 2007. Not much of an improvement.

Watch this space for a real live experience with emcom !

Depends...

In any case, Nice bump there - 1 Year!

Our Experience with emburst / emcom

We are with emburst/ emcom in the Hartebeespoort area since may 2007 and this is our experience

So far we have paid over R7392.00 in set-up costs alone and now another bill of just under R1000,00 for repairs to keep the system up and running .

That is on top of our monthly subscription of just over R500pm.

We have the business contract of 512kbps, Uncapped, 24/7.

We found out that it was not uncapped but as they say "soft" capped, with a threshold limit.

Lately they have dropped our line speeds from 260 kbps to 130 kbps http://www.speedtest.net/result/363130710.png

This is their response to the line speed query.

"With reference to AUP policy, your service has been restricted.
Restrictions may be lifted after hours or during weekends.
Excess Utilization of Network Resources http://www.emcom.za.net/aup2.htm "

According to our records we have not gone over our threshold and most of our downloads take place during the evening, to comply with a verbal request from John, the main man.

Download speeds are increased slightly at night.

I'm also at Harties with no other real option available. Expensive to set-up. Service is not so hot, Often the connection is down, sometimes for more than 3 days at a time. Slow, especially in the morning. Suppose better than dial up.

All businesses have to start somewhere; they will prolly get better eventually. If they take the initiative to give something their competitors aren't giving.
And if they could give coverage in our area I would prolly give them a go.

Being a new company, they have had a lot of teething probs. It took them 9 months before we had a system that we could surf the net and send emails without the whole system cutting out all the time, and all the while we were paying full rates plus we kept our dial up contract going because the system was not functional.

.

That is what they initially offered, something their competitors weren't giving.

When we took out the contract, we were told that we could download 24/7 and that only p2p was shaped.

However, the problem here, I can only surmise is that , they never did their research properly or they never intended to uphold their side of the contract.... It was too good to be true.

Right from the onset they shaped all downloads to as low as 7-15kbps (we never did p2p), This they denied saying it was technical problems our side or the servers etc, etc.. After many months, we eventually threw our toys out the cot and amazingly line speeds improved.
However this state of affairs did not last and next thing our line speeds were low again, and this is when we were informed that we had a threshold of 30gb. Still, considering the price, this was still reasonable. We have stuck within this threshold limit and limited most of out downloads to late afternoons and evenings as per their request. However our line speed dropped about 3 months ago to half (260kbps)and now half again (130kbps), however after hours ( although not always) and weekends line speeds are faster..

Then they quote their AUP policy and excessive utilization as their reason for dropping the speeds which is a whole lot of rubbish as we are very aware of what our internet usage is and have it monitored all the time via various programs.

Maybe they are over subscribed and experiencing bandwidth problems, for speeds during the day are easily half again, running as low as 50-70kbps and lower at times. It took just on 2 hrs to download a virus protection upgrade of11mb, yesterday afternoon.

It also took them 3 weeks to effect a repair.

Our emails are ignored, even ones requesting a summary of the equipment and replacement costs for insurance purposes.

Do these complaints warrant filing a dispute with ICASA., or is that just a waste of time and energy?

and I thought I was been ripped off!
But, do not fret; I believe competition is on its way in the form of another WISP early next year with very competitive prices.
I for one am going to change, as will quite a few of my neighbors, I am sure.

Finally competition and a choice!
