Emule P2P HELP

Sorry if this has been posted before or in the wrong place.

I am fairly new to ADSL and the Internet and was wondering if I could get some advice. When downloading things such as MP3's, vids, etc. My friend said get Emule and use that. Now I have installed it and shared a few files but it takes forever just to start downloading some files. Which server do I connect to? (as there are quite a few)

Do I go for the one with the most users and low ping?

Most users and lowest ping yes, find the best balance

Take note though of the number of sources you have for the specific file you're trying to get. Obviously the more the better. If you're looking for some thing rare then it will take awhile.

Search for a very common song (even if you have it) and see how that runs; it should give you an indication of how things are going
