firstly, if anyone who knows me is reading this... dont get too excited, im just gathering intel :p

looking to the guys for some info here (if you from cpt then even better..)

ive been told by a few people now that walking into shimansky/american swiss etc etc is the worst idea. rather get an idea/design of what your SO wants then get it made by a private jeweler. thoughts?

Rich, if you reading this get your bro to organise me some tanzanite please man ;)

still busy grappling with the cost aspect ie. what I should spend.

Im not a big earner, so dont come with like R50k ring ideas please......

The general rule, from what I've heard is 3 months pay slips is the total amount you should spend. It seems crazy!

she said if I spend 3 x salary Im a dead man... haha!

rather spend that money on house stuff or holiday after etc etc etc

my girl has the same logic.
rather put the money on the honeymoon and house

My wife's engagement ring cost about 75% of my before tax salary and 175% of hers. The total cost of the wedding was 1.33 times the cost of the ring. Actual figures are meaningless as at the time a unit of electricity cost 1 cent and a car could be filled with petrol for R5.

I can hook you up with a very good jeweller in CT. Can send you pics of what he made for my wife. Awesome stuff, and pays huge attention to detail. He gives certificates for anything that requires one and will walk you through the whole process.

Sent you PM. And dont worry about being fussy, he is probably even more so!

I was quite lucky. Fiance and I looked all over for a ring / design she liked. Even looked online. Then she saw a ring at American Swiss which she adored, and I must say I like very much as well. And it was 35% off at the time. Paid 1/3 of what I was budgeting for in the end.

RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My missus is an architect..so we designed the ring together. She is also a realist..and said she wanted a ring that wouldnt cost a fortune in insurance or she would be scared to wear etc. we look at tanzanite but on mohs scale of hardness its a 7 which is to soft too wear every day. also 18ct gold wears easily.
in the end we settled on man made stones, so she got 1.7 carats and platinum setting...look awesome didnt cost a fortune. and it was great to share the design aspect...she got something she wanted.

Lol another engagement thread :D All the best mate, hope it goes off as well as you plan! When are you planning on popping the question?

I've decided to go the private jeweller route as well. Busy looking at designs on the net, and will take the one that I decide on to a jeweller to have it made. So far one of the better sites I've come across is http://www.diamondrings.co.za/showproducts.aspx?subcategory=7.

The trickiest part for me was finding out the ring size, but I managed to get that sorted out by trying on one of her rings and it turns out that it fit on my baby finger :)

PS: don't listen to anybody telling you how much to spend on a ring. Spend whatever you're comfortable spending, and if your gal loves you then she'll appreciate whatever you get her because it's the gesture that counts, not the price. After all you still have a wedding to plan, honeymoon to go on, housing expenditure and possibly kids at some point. All these things cost dough, so best not to blow it all right now.
