I always thought any part of Russia on the western side of the Ural mountains was classified as European while anything on the eastern side was classified as Asian.

True, honest mistake. But France in 98, Italy in 90, Spain in 82, Germany in 74, England in 66, Sweden in 58 etc.
It looks to me like it's been in Europe virtually every 8 years, and this is the first time in a long time that the pattern has been broken. And you're complaining about Europe getting it again? It's called the world cup for a reason, and if you ask me, Europe has seen it's fair share as hosts.

I think you may be correct there. It seems the Ural mountains are the 'border' between Euro Russia and Asian Russia.

Probably a good thing England didn't get it - giving tax breaks etc. to FIFA executives... that BBC Panorama program should be required viewing for everyone.
FIFA is about politics and corporate cash not football....
England had the best bid and lost but Russia's the most corrupt so the cronies will benefit.

Sure, but football in general is, and that doesn't mean that 1st world countries should always host the world cup.

Don't most of the south caucus states in russia want to break away? Are there any major cities on the asian part of russia?

Its the WORLD cup after all, if they want to make it the WesternWorld cup then they should call it that. Im all for their decisions. We get more than enough of England and US already.
And funnily enough, England only got 2 votes out of the 22, and Australia only got 1.

England last held a World Cup in 1966.
A few countries in the Caucasus are too.
Egypt has territory in both Africa and Asia.

Like I said earlier on, my understanding has always been anything on the west of the Urals = European and anything on the east = Asian. Seeing as pretty much all the main cities are on the west, I would classify it as European.
Hey their 1.5 million population is football crazy. They even have a women's league......
