So Dimension Data and IS supply us with 20Mb fibre line marketed as "Enterprise" Fibre for R11+k per month.

What is the difference between Enterprise and a standard residential fibre line?
I'm informed Enterprise means they have to assist asap but from what we experienced, we have been offline and this hasn't really been the case as they rely on openserve it seems.
 
So guessing by the numerous responses here , "Enterprise" is complete and utter BS.

Surprised no DD employees on the to the forum to sing it's praise or they worried they'll get shot down.

This is also why Natting has become an issue all of a sudden where businesses that still has "older" products, but need Static IP, are now forced to change to business solutions.
 
The SLA will be better, the contention will be a lot less. FTTH probably operates at 1:32 or 1:64 (guessing) while business will probably be 1:5 or in your case probably 1:1 at that price. This means you are the only one using that 20Mbit at any given time (probably).

Normal FTTH has let's say 1Gbit backhaul. This is shared between 20 households. The FNO counts on the fact that not all 20 households will use it at once. In your case, you have your own 20Mbit all to yourself probably.

Not necessarily , SLAs are enforceable and we generally see SLA delivery on point with the larger industry players. When targets are missed, most SLAs are punitive. If we escalated a ticket to DFA for example, at any time of the day or night, it's treated with the same priority and attended to- that's a SLA. I've been out to a SLA call at 2am for DFA to float a new fibre and splice it, for a single enterprise client. FTTH FNOs will let this kind of break sit until at least the next morning, if not a day or so while teams are arranged. When a business's ability to operate, revenue and productivity are based on guarantees of connectivity; then it makes sense to pay for this level of support.

Residential fibre is "best effort" and broadband (shared, at some point). While some FTTH FNOs have upped their maintenance and service game and do operate really well (sometimes at FTTB service levels) - best effort is just that, and there is no guarantee that your service will be restored timeously - especially in the case of a major outage. Another example is packet loss, route backhauls and more; these are all controlled by the FNO and usually "best effort." Just look through this forum to see instances where issues have taken days to resolve across many FNOs. Most FTTH FNOs don't have 24/7 support desks, so after hours and weekend support is hit and miss email support.

Fundamentally, it costs big money to deliver internet. The FTTH revolution has been great and South African homes really do benefit from one of the highest standards of FTTH internet quality in the world at good prices; so it's easy to confuse broadband and DIA. Homes benefit from economies of scale; but the infrastructure, support and maintenance cost money, especially when built specifically for business and enterprise. Enterprise fibre (DIA) has some distinct differences:
  • Generally carry SLAs, with MTTR (mean time to repair) and punitive clauses
  • Specific use case: L2/L3 services, Jumbo frames, EVPN underlays, multiple classes of service, dedicated VLANs for VoIP and other RT services, 24/7 link monitoring, Multiple metro (backhaul from the POP) options, diversity (multi routes), redundancy (backups)
  • Higher build costs which need to be re-covered over shorter timeframes (FTTH FNOs plan a GPON (mostly) point dedicated to x number of homes in an area on scales of 10-25 years, FTTB is 2-5 years / build).
  • All that a FTTH installer needs to do is take a drop cable, plug/splice it in at one of these points and voila, the entire network is complete into your home. Provision and ont and you're good to go. There are spliters and natural contention as mentioned above.
  • FTTB build plans usually involve getting a fibre pair from the client back to the local POP - this includes splicing from the client's server room, through every manhole until the POP. That's why you see DFA/Openserve/Liquid teams working on manholes all the time. Which means lower light loss, complete visibility on the full circuit, the ability to manage the line from POP to client in its entirety as well as the ability to deliver specific services to that client to suit their requirements.
It all comes down to which tool is best for the job. Broadband is one of those tools- while it may look like a decent solution; it may not tick all the boxes needed to keep a business running correctly.

I have a LOT of clients on Fibre...some home users and some business users.

The business users' breakdowns are treated the same way as home user breakdowns.

No one is fixing my mom and pop store's Fibre at 2am......

If your SLA backed fibres aren't being treated as such, then the ISP needs to up their game; it's their responsibility to address and action the back to back SLA they have with the vendor.

Comes down to the tool metaphor. Mom's and pop's shops definitely don't need Enterprise fibre - I agree 100%. Where it's possible, we always look at Broadband (sometimes multiple broadband options for redundancy) instead of Enterprise for FTTB. Unfortunately for many, the build cost to reach them often doesn't justify anything less than an enterprise service. Assuming 50-150k is spent to deliver a service to this small shop (as is often the case in semi industrial settings); it's hard to justify a cheaper product when there's no guarantee that the service will be used longer than the contract term. So DFA and others deliver an enterprise product wherever a build is required. This will change as more Broadband options roll out everywhere.

If they already HAVE Fibre to that building, like I have encountered 90% of the times, this is no excuse.

One example: Client's building already has Fibre node and I order through WA and they send Vuma.

Vuma contacts me and says yes there is fibre...they must just blow it into the office. In the meantime WA delivers the "free" router.

Vuma techies call me from site: sorry we cannot install FTTH here...this is a business address.

After 3 days I get hold of WA on their WhatsApp support and they tell me that the client now has to buy a LESSER service at 4 times the rate.

When I ask them what the client gets for 4 times the rate...they also mumble about SLA and "up times" and the usual kak.

And of course the client says go fuk yourselves and keeps his ADSL.

By the way this was 7 months ago...that router is still lying there after I let them know the order was cancelled and that the must collect the router.

It is a scam...pure and simple. They see it is a Business, they demand more money.

For the price we paying and we have been down for almost a full working day this year already, we felt we are not getting our bang for buck.
Also 11k for a 20Mb link with 50+ staff connected, for the price we paying 50Mb minimum or at best 100Mb.
We are not big users but feel 20Mb for 11k is very steep.

you are be ripped.I have 2 x "premium" fiber lines at work with high sla's , static ip addresses etc and my most expensive one is around 6-7k for a 50Mbps.Thats even expensive.Ive now applied for another enterprise 10Mbps and it will cost +-2-3k per month.

The price you’re paying is a minimum of 400% too high (assuming there aren’t other mitigating factors). You should have at least 300-500 Mbps of capacity on fibre at that price, if not more. You can drop me a PM with your address for a comparison.
