Entry level DSLR

@wolf

Like Mean said , Canon does not carry a international warranty. So if u buy in SA u get it fixed here( correct me if I wrong)

From what I have read and heard Canon SA will not honour an international warranty but you'll have to phone Canon SA to verify that.

I checked those prices from Asia and they only seem to be about 10% cheaper than the local suppliers at most.
Canon 650D with 18-135mm STM lens = 35600 Thai Baht (R9439)
FotoDiscountWorld sell the same kit for R10195 so you save R756.
Then add the price of an international warranty and you're probably back to local prices or maybe even more.

Then you may get held up by customs at JHB when you return and may end up having to pay import duties even if you claim it's a travel camera.or present.
They are full of nonsense.
Not worth all the hassled and risk for a 10% savings IMO.

I'm not sure about Thailand, but my deal I got in Singapore saved me about R5k, so it was well worth it. The camera's have become so reliable these days I think the warranty is a moot point, how long is the warranty valid for anyway, is it lifetime? I'll have to go and check what mine said.

I just saw on the SACamera website that it carry's a 2 year local warranty.

Went to a camera store to buy a CF card, the salesman was quite hilarious, I love people with a sense of humor, I asked for a high speed 32GB CF card, he cracked me up by saying R2200.00

So I went to game and bought a cheap 4GB 30MB/sec (same brand) for 250 for now.

For a 7D which speeds should I be looking at? I think the one for 2k might be a too much? The last thing I want is for the card to have an affect on the burst, although 30MB/sec seems plenty.

To get the most out of your camera you want a UDMA CF card, and yes, they're a little on the pricey side. :o

I used a high speed 32GB microSD to take photos with my old cam, going to miss being able to take out the card from the camera and being able to slip it in my phone or TF.

I don't even have a CF reader which you need to update the firmware.

Was looking at takealot, those frigging CF cards go up to 4 thousand for a 32GB, insane.

When buying a card, check the write speed of the card to camera.

The write speed of the 7D is roughly 50Mb/sec, so any card rated 600x or 60MB should equal out the write /buffer delay if shooting bursts in RAW.

Also looking to get an entry level DSLR. Looking at something second hand. Max budget around R3500. I've been offered a 1000D, 18-55mm lense (which I will probably sell), bag, battery, SD card etc for around R2700. Good deal?

Not a bad deal but consider that you can get a brand new 1100D, Lowepro bag, memory card and 18-55mm lens for less than R1300 more. I'm wary of purchasing second hand equipment because of it's sensitivity towards abuse and accidents.
I'm also not so sure you'll get a good price if you try to sell the 18-55mm lens.
The kit lenses on entry level bodies are the least desirable lenses to have.

I got a small bag for my 7D knowing that most of the time I would use one lens, costed less than 200, also the guy at the shop advised me to get a lens filter to protect the lens, this was 100 bucks, seemed logical knowing the lens is worth a couple thousand.

You can stop that right now! :D

Don't get me started on lens filters… suffice it to say you've just put a cheap piece of glass (assuming it's even glass) in front of your lens, how well do you think that is going to work out? ;)

And while we're at it...
