Using mine too - just haven't had anything scanned yet.

I just said try - not buy :) I haven't tried the K20D - just held it in the shop. Viewfinder is a little bigger than the 40D. That K100D Super was nice though. I just looked at some pics I took at ISO3200 (not expanded). Geez, it's as good, if not better than what the 40D does at ISO1600. Gotta love those 6MP CCDs...

I haven't actually started with the velvia yet. Thought I had ordered it but when I started wondering why it's not arriving, I couldn't find a trace of my order. And once I have it in the camera, I suspect it will be along time before I get to develop - that film is expensive, I'm not going to snap wildly with it :) And then I need to find a lab. My local 1-hour service have never heard of Velvia.... :eek:

Is sensor cleaning very important on a dslr?

I appro'd the 350D and it takes out some good looking photo's. It does not come with sensor cleaning though. Same with the Nikon D40 which I am also considering.

Maybe I should go with what bwana said and get a Canon 400D?

I gotta act fast on this cos the window of opportunity with the lovely wifey closes today. I have to buy it today - otherwise I will be dSLRless.

Pentax has image stabiliser / sensor cleaning..ect... was comparing it to Canon 350d / nikon d40 when i bought... if i remember corretly.

Got mine from Kloppers in Bloemfontein... :D (of all places!) Man do they have a HUGE range!

D40 & 450D produce the same great picture quality. Get the one that feels better in your hands. The D40 felt more comfortable in my hands, but everybody is different. I know some people want the live view on the Canon. The Canon also comes with an IS lens.

I finally made up my mind and went for the Canon EOS 400D with the standard lens kit and a high speed 4GB CF card.

In the end the choice boiled down to which fit better in my hands and the 400D moulded with my hands.

I hope I made a good choice. Once I get the hang of it, I will buy a 55-300mm lens (??), spare battery, and speedlite flash for it.

I am busy charging the battery now so cannot wait to get home this evening to try it out.

I was given Paint Shop Pro as a freebie. I wonder if someone want it in exchange for a CF flash - cos I use CS3 for all my post work.

I need to know what software is recommended and the stuff that I should consider PC wise.

Also if I need to update the camera's firmware. I am so new at this but I am totally excited.


Any quick tips on must have goodies for this camera:
I was thinking, some glass, extra battery, flash, CF cards. Working on a budget of say R10000 and would like to get the best-bang-for-your-buck items.

I suppose that depends on what you intend to do in terms of post. Do you shoot raw or JPEG?

Are you just moving from film now or have you had a DSLR before?

Extra glass - start with the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II

Speaking of flash cards, I'm trying to decide what to buy before going on a fairly long trip. I have a few different cards, so last night I benchmarked them to get an idea of what the performance difference is.

What I did was wrote a script that will copy one directory filled with CR2 files - around 600mb - to the flash card (connected via a fairly expensive card reader). Before running the script I did a 'sync' - this forces the OS to flush the disc caches, to make sure there are no pending writes to the CF card. The script itself doe the copy, then does another sync, to make sure the data is committed to the CF card. I threw in my Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo for good measure. I then timed the script (i.e. copy + sync). Here's what I found:

The same? :confused: You're brave suggesting that a 6MP equals the quality of a 12MP :D

I'm also gonna go for the Sandisk Extreme IV 8GB card.
