So, I've compiled a list of the top 50 games of all time at iafrica.com. For the past three weeks we've been counting down ten at a time, and this week we're up to numbers 30 to 21 :) http://iafrica.com/technology/features/2277300.htm

(links to the previous articles are in the intro)

What you guys think? The biggest issue I had was with my colleagues insisting on adding this game in, or removing a game because another title in the series appeared in the list already.

Awesome List

You have "The SIMS" but no Dungeon Keeper?
No Quake III ?
No Homeworld?

These better be in the next list!

but dude - loved the list! Put together very well and is quite accurate according to me (so far) - Brought back some good memories!

Oh...and Turok - don't forget that
Also, Total Annihilation

Oooo if I had my wish, Turok 2 and Descent would be making it! Thanks for the thoughts on the list, really appreciate it guys! :D

The web developer was shocked that I had Quake 3 in the bottom ten and kicked up a fuss! So I had to appease him and move it up! :erm:

So what are your favourite titles of all time?

Command and Conquer is ranked higher than StarCraft? One of these games is the national sport of Korea. I'll give you a hint - its not Command and Conquer.

I suppose with any such list, the problem you have is that its a personal feeling as to whether a certain game ranks higher than another. Or even what should be included.

Personally I hope to see the likes of Half Life and BioShock. And Diablo II and Baldurs Gate II (those two should be in the top 5, IMHO). Also, while its not everyone's cup of tea, the Pokemon series should be included because its probably the best selling game series of all time. And a Final Fantasy game or two I suppose.

And a Final Fantasy game or two I suppose.

That was the problem I had, for some reason, my editor thought that adding multiple games in a series wouldn't be a good idea. I see his logic but yeah, I wish I could put in multiple Zelda titles!

Yeah, definitely man, one can't take the list as fact. At the end of the day, it's just an opinion :)

Doom?
Dune 2?
Quake?
Fade to Black ( seriously underrated. )

Many many games to list. But nice list though :p

Sorry, yeah I read the rest of the list, noticed a few of the games I had mentioned.

Half Life 1 and 2 should probably both be there. Half Life 1 really started a new era in FPS games and opened the door for mods like Counter Strike.

I've never played them myself, but I know a lot of people would want Fallout 1 & 2 on the list. You should probably also add Super Mario Bros (the first one), Street Fighter 2, and MegaMan 2. Is there a Mortal Kombat on the list? Tekken?

Command & Conquer, released on August 31, 1995,
StarCraft series was released on 31 March 1998.

See the THREE year difference? That's why C&C should be above SC :). Blizzard did what they do best, copy and improve. Westwood on the other hand pioneered the RTS genre as we know it even today. I would even consider Dune 2 (another westwood game) above C&C :) .

It's like saying Quake 3 should be above Quake on the basis it's being played today.

I suppose if you're not going to clutter it with individually listing versions in a series then you should consider listing the entire series as a single entity [and stick to it for the entire list] . Like Prince of Persia , or Tombraider or Civilisation .

Listing titles individually is always tricky, simply because you always run into the "genre changing game" vs "the one that everyone played" debate . Diablo 1 vs. Diablo 2 comes to mind. Also Fallout 1 vs 2 vs 3 or the Elder Scrolls 1 [Arena] vs 2 [Daggerfall] vs 3 [Morrowind] vs 4 [Oblivion] ...not a pretty sight when you start listing them seperately.

Plus it sometimes annoying when the top 10 goes :

Warcraft 1
Warcraft 2
Diablo 1
Diablo 2
Quake 2
Quake 1
Final Fantasy 7
Final Fantasy 8
Baldur's Gate 1
Baldur's Gate 2
....

So i'd rather see more "franchises" i.e. "Call of Duty SERIES" rather than COD 1,2,3 ...zillion times on the list.

Too true man, it does tend to get a bit cluttered, but then again, you also have the problem of crappy games in a series, e.g. COD3 :)
