Err wtf is this - Email from Afrihost?

Holy crap, it seems I must be the luckiest Afrihost user ever. So far I only had one problem and that was last night with slow speeds. I only download after hours and switch my pc off during the day when I am not here. Downloads are currently running at 36KB/s on my 384 line 9.6gb sofar for the month.

Don't tempt fate....

Even HTTP has huge latency issues since the IS switch. And everything else is useless, even after hours.

Hero to zero indeed. I wouldn't have minded if they were honest and said look, we can't actually do this anymore. And if they'd done so with enough warning for us to sort out something else, their reputation would have been reasonably intact with regard to service levels.

They are now however very much disliked by me. Goodbye and I hope I never have to deal with them again.

Well after having dealings with IS as a business connection provider (they are cr@p) I have now been forced into the same IS situation by Afrihost. Just when i thought a GREAT ISP!! pffffff Gian has now gotten too big to care. Typical South AFrican company scenario!! Eventually they just don't give a **** and it is ALL about the money and NOT about the customer...

Is theye ANY ISP left in SA that don't use IS and are descent? I need to cancel Afrihost and move onto the next one.

OH and by the way i chatted to an afrihost support guy last night and asked to be moved back he said i have to cancel this account and open a new account and Afrihost are moving ALL their uncapped accounts to IS. SO if i open a new account I will just get moved too. My dad isn't having this issue cos he isn't uncapped BUT i am going to get him to move anyway!

Afriholst are showing us the finger - we just do it back.

I've been having terrible speeds on my Afrihost Uncapped the past couple of days especially.

Here is my speedtest on Namesco, a London server:

Barely getting 10KB/s downloading Gmail attachments.

If this keeps up I will have to move somewhere else too, and it's been a smooth ride until recently..

Same here. On a 384 account. Can't even open Gmail. Have to use the basic html version. Emailed support last night and asked that they look at my account. Part of the response I received was "If you use more than 7gigs within 10days your account will be shaped. It's a 10day rolling threshold"

Never had any issues before the IS move this month.

So basically if you do roughly 21 gigs on the line you'll be shaped to hell. Making some generalisations, let's do the maths. If you sleep 8 hours a day, are at work 8 hours Monday to Friday, and there are 22 working days and 8 weekend days in a month you have:

22 x 8 hours per day = 176 weekday hours
8 x 16 hours per day = 128 weekend hours

Total = 304 hours to surf the internet :D

21 gigabytes = 21 504 megabytes = 71 megabytes per hour

71 megabytes = 568 megabits = 581 632 kilobits per hour / 60 = 9694 kilobits per minute = 161 kilobits per second = 42% of a 384 kilobit per second service.

Now THAT is what I call false advertising.

I implore everyone and their dog to stay away from this rubbish.

I also couldn't even open Gmail.

To stay unthrottled on a 384K account, you can do a max of 15 gigs per month. This costs you R197.
With their 3-for-1 capped special, 15 capped gigs, at full speed, costs you R147.

What a farce.

But even worse than the product is the service experience I had with them. Seriously, beware. They don't have to slightest clue how these IS accounts work and yet they resell them. I was fed different stories and promises and lies for over a week.

They also forced this switch upon us with promises of improvement in service. This was a lie.

No trial period, and the switch happened at the end of the month to make sure all our pennies were firmly in their pockets before we noticed how useless this offering is. In the meantime, they are dishing out free gigs to their capped subscribers, and handing out ipods and ipads in their competition.

I have no time for people who do business this way.

Their "No Catch. Pure Internet Joy" tagline remains for the uncapped account adverts.

There is enough to take them on legally from at least two angles here but I honestly can't be arsed.
