hi. so having trawled the wonderful world of the internet, I come to you, the clever folk.

the story as follows. about 6 months ago I upgraded my motherboard and cpu chip. at the time the router was too far from my pc, so used a wifi dongle for internet access. now Ive moved, and the router is 2 foot from my pc. wanted to plug in a lan cable, but it gives me Error 651, and doesnt work at all. Ive checked the drivers, its not that. do I uninstall the dongle? seen I should do some things like port(? cant remember now) reset in command prompt.

any suggestions please? I need better latency for gaming plz lol :o

Isn't 651 a PPPoE error, are you plugged into the WAN port of the router not LAN?

will have to check that when I get home. I dont understand though, how can I plug a lan cable into a wan port? and if so, why do they use the same socket? who's stupid idea was that?

edit: from a few google images, wan and lan ports are interchangable?

plug pc into yellow lan ports on router
Blue wan port is for modem and what not. not for pc on network.

There should be a single port with an image at one end of the ports, can't remember the exact image.

The others should have a number from 1-4 or however many. The ethernet cable to the PC should come from one of these numbered ports. Obviously the Telkom cable goes into the first one I mentioned.

there is only one lan/wan port on the router. possible that its only a wan port? its a telkom router, so it wouldnt surprise me too much -.-

Model of the router? So we can Google and have a look at it.

from what I can see off telkom's site, its a DSL D-Link Router, I think. and it has the following blurb

Platform: High speed - Complies with 802.11n WiFi technology and transmission rate of up to 300Mbps
Platform: Great coverage - Powerful external antennas increase wireless signal penetration
Platform: Safeguard - The built-in firewall function will effectively block malicious attacks, including parental control
Platform: Ultra-stable - Equipped with the latest VDSL2/ADSL2+chip solution

which doesnt mean doodly for what Im looking for. and image search doesnt show any with the same back area where you plug the lan cable in

The router must be configured wrong, or something. If you can log in onto the router, and check if the settings looks OK? Check if the DHCP server is on/enabled, and some routers have a setting for which interface(wired or wireless) must they server DHCP on.

Will wait until you're home then we can figure it out and you can send the model number.

so the router is a D-Link G225. It does have lan ports which were conveniently, and perfectly hidden behind a lovely orange sticker. however, still getting the error 651

Have you had a look at this?

Also, strange that you would get a PPPoE related error on your PC. I think this is probably a router configuration problem.

router configuration hey? hmmmm. what I dont understand is that is should simply just work, but doesnt. how is it possible that the router would be incorrectly configured. the wifi works just fine and dandy

If you're looking to blame Telkom here, go ahead, say it out loud.

But while routers should work fine from the start, sometimes they don't. I received my router from AfriHost, plugged it into the fiber CPE, works 100% from the word go, except any device plugged into a LAN port does not get an IP. So I had to enable DHCP for the LAN ports. It does happen.

YES, ITS ALL TELKOMS FAULT! muahahahahahahahaa

listen, dunno where you got that, but anyway. this is why I turned to you guys, cos I dont know. what I do (did?) know is that one plugs a lan cable in and it works without any extra fiddling required. sadly in this case, its not.

ok, more news. finally got the cable connection working after fiddling and praying in the router setup page. but... and heres the weird thing. the cable connection only works if the wireless connection Ive been using is on and connected to the router. so now I have two connections, which isnt in itself bad I guess.

so wtf?? any suggestions as to what to do next regarding taking the wireless usb stick Im using out of the equation entirely?
