So i was at centurion mall today (to check out the new Istore, but thats beyond the point) and i noticed that the escalators from the malls lower level to the upper level weren't working, but i also noticed that contrary to how the escalators usually work, people were walking up on the left and down on the right of the stairs. But the escaltors work up on the right and down on the left.

Does anyone have any idea why the escalators are not in the normal "traffic flow" order? it totally confuses me EVERY single time i goto a mall and the traffic direction is swopped.

Maybe call Centurion mall or something, i'm sure they'll be more interested in your findings

Also bugs me, I think its just that escalaltor installers pr perhaps mall management don't think about this logically.

Its not just centurion mall who does this its almost every mall i know.

I think i should maybe just find out from the mall management.

/to those who want to troll:
I was just wondering if anyone possibly has a rational explanation for the escalators being the way they are, i guess i am a person always looking for ways to better peoples lives, and though its only a few split seconds it will make my life easier, cause when i choose which side of the mall to walk on i choose which will be easiest to get to the escalators and once i reach them i have to walk through loads of people to get to the opposite one...

Ok maybe I'm missing something but why should up be left and down be right?

I reckon those people also can't drive then. :D

The escalators are imported from the US

lol, they are two separate units installed by a company, they decide which goes up and which goes down.

That said I'm use to escalators up/left, down/right.

pretoria might be different though.

There's 2 sets of escalators at Centurion mall, the upper one (above Woolworths, going up towards Game) definitely have the up escalator on the left and the down one on the right.

The other one (which is incidentally always broken) is the one going down to CNA, that one is for some reason swopped around. Maybe that is why it is always broken ;)

Methinks it is more a contractor mis-design thing. With all the BEE / tender / shoddy workmanship we have in this country , it would be no surprise if whoever installed it never even thought about the whole left/right up/down thing.

Maybe i'm completely wrong and they actually DO design all this according to the "predicted traffic flow" in the mall. Maybe they figure everyone is going to go down that escalator and go towards CNA/Restaurants , and the people who comes from the Banks/Post Office (on the right side) will most likely be going UP the mall . Hence, avoiding a traffic jam situation there.

Either way , the fact that it is not consistent even inside the same mall, tells me it is either some "mall-flow" statistic that we don't know about , or simply typical a case of using inexperienced contractors who never thought about this at all.

Generally the escalators in the malls here down in the cape is up left down right.

Canal Walk by Woolworths/Incredible Connection entrance: you have to enter the escalators on the right. There by food court by Foschini, its the other way round. I used to always stop and think for split second when using the Woolworths-entrance escalator

Majority I've seen are right flowing.

where there are more than 2 level escalators that go in opposite directions they have to be switched.

E.g. Menlyn the bottom level is right up left down. And the top level is left up right down.
Elsewhere in the mall with only one set it is right.
