Is it possible at the moment to add an additional number on an MTN contract, and then link it up to an eSIM on a Galaxy Watch? I spoke to someone at an MTN store today and they said that the system was having issues with them and it wasn't presently available, but it might be working again in a month or so (apparently Apple Watchs work fine). I hadn't mentioned which model of Galaxy Watch, and the staff member made it sound like it applied to all Samsung wearables.

Is this the experience with others who have tried, or do I need to just keep trying different MTN stores until someone can help?

apple watch does not work, i've tried so many times, MTN is utterly useless

MTN is past useless. I have spent hours on the phone and been to 2 MTN stores. Nobody has the knowledge to assist and no supervisor or manager is available. They just want to convert my primary number to an eSIM, not realising that the wearable needs a separate eSIM. MTN, please start training the idiots that work for you.

Hi guys,

Excuse my ignorance on this - how do you setup a LTE galaxy watch to basically have the same number as your phone?

My understanding was you can take your calls without your phone because its the same number. Or am i misunderstaning how this thing works?

you PORT your number to an Esim, and then have only the watch as the primary phone with no SIM in your phone,
or you just leave things as they are and just see the notification and answer calls on the watch connected still.

Any thoughts to taking an esim with somebody like Afribost airmobile. You get 10gb and 100 mins free airtime.

For me 90% of the time the watch will be connected to the phone, when I go out for a walk I guess I can leave the phone at home and have the ability to listen to a pod cast or make a call in an emergency?

After chasing up with a couple of different MTN stores and finding them useless, I just bought a Telkom Mobile eSIM and linked that to the watch along with an Internet Starter Pack to give me 100MB/month for a year for R50.

Hopefully AirMobile would work the same.

You'll need to go to an MTN store and ask them to provision an eSIM for your watch, hoping that you get to speak to a competent person who can help you. It's possible in theory, but mine never worked properly, simply saying it wasn't RICA-ed when trying to call from the watch.

Nope, see above.

I saw another option, MegsApp - they offer e-sim, for R150 you get 6Gb data which never expires - so may pull the trigger on this.

Just strange to have to have a separate number etc because some of the apps are on the watch and may reference the watches number - like whatsapp, or messages etc.

I've read online that it's not possible to connect a Telkom esim to wearables as its not supported, but hopefully that information is out of date! How did you get this right? I'm with Telkom and want to activate my LTE galaxy watch.

There's nothing special on the Telkom side to get it to work, you get the prepaid QR code from them and it should be fine.

The only thing is if you can get the Wear app on the phone to let you scan in the QR code. Before you get the code you should test if it takes you to the screen where you can scan in the QR code with the phone camera in the Wear app, otherwise you might have to follow these instructions to force it to allow you to scan a QR code.

I have got MTN prepaid working on the watch so I'm using that now because it allows me to DataShare, but I did the Telkom eSIM route a couple of times before.

Thank you so much this is amazing news! I already have a Telkom contract and want to connect that phone number to my watch- do I just do a sim swap to convert my physical sim to an esim and then scan the QR code?

I don't really know when it comes time to do it with a contract. I've only been getting prepaid SIMs and activating them on the Watch with their own number.

Quick question, why are you posting this in the MTN section? 🤔
Edit: Wait, never mind, I see you posted on the Telkom page too now.

Hi all, been looking for info on the same and was finally able to add my FNB connect prepaid to my galaxy watch 7. Sim is on and states that it's active but when phoning the number the automated voice says the number is not available. Anyone know how I can resolve this issue? Apologies for using this forum but it's the only one I've found with some activity.

Thanks in advance
