Eskom being robbed blind

I for the life of me cannot fathom why scrap metal yards aren't being clamped down on. Stop the demand and you'll stop the supply.

Even if the government bought out every scrap metal yard owner with a golden handshake - they'd still save millions in cable theft and service disruption.

Turn scrap metal yards into non-profit recycling plants. No payout, no reason to steal cables.

Not to try and paint a rosy picture everytime, but in our town here in Norway that's exactly how scrap metal and copper is disposed of, meaning there's zero market for cable theft.

The local electrical companies literally just leave their cable outside on drums because there's no point locking it up.

show us the prisons with Play-stations and Coffee lounges, @Voicy

Eskom need to start doing their own milling machine maintenance. It will take the motivation for the crime away.
And if the coral is not clean, the coal supplier must pay the repair cost.

You cannot fund a mafia state at the local level with an annoying framework of governance and law enforcement getting in the way.

It's not just cables. Last year, I remember seeing some enterprising young men stripping all the reflectors off the on/off ramp barriers on the N2 near Somerset West. In broad daylight no less

How an ethical scrap dealer can accept those is beyond me. Same with manhole covers etc. I'd be very happy to sacrifice the scrap metal industry to preserve infrastructure

I still say easiest way to stop cable theft is to make it illegal to sell, buy or export copper. I feel sorry about the scrap metal dealers but it worth sacrificing them for the greater good.
I've been saying this for years already.

Also time to start looking at the rol eof copper and cable etc. suppliers TO ESKOM. R2 billion a year...nice income stream.
