People are stealing Eskom dry

Unscrupulous Eskom staff and contractors are stealing the state-owned power utility dry, and cable theft forces it to spend about R2 billion every year replacing stolen cables.

An Eskom spokesperson told MyBroadband that the utility also tracks cable theft incidents monthly, saying that "the trends are unrelenting and commensurate to the South African crime landscape".

The problem also lies with the law. Police catch a person who stole the stuff. Person goes to court , gets bail. He claim he never stole it, it was just lying there. I feel sorry for the police. The law system is the current problem.

I still say easiest way to stop cable theft is to make it illegal to sell, buy or export copper. I feel sorry about the scrap metal dealers but it worth sacrificing them for the greater good.

If they weren't buying the stuff the problem wouldn't exist.

Yet tax pax payers as well as consumers must carry the brunt of this whilst Eskom employees (who either steal or are not reporting it) get a 7% increase (bigger increase than most in private sector). Just proves solidly the point that a State owned entity is not the way to go. A private enterprise has to make ends meet, and workers know if that does not happen, they lose increases or jobs.

I live in an area that is drowning in theft by the nyope boys and other undersireables...
To the point of the guys literally running to shops and stealing the outside lights etc...at 10am...
We had NO issues here prior to the scrappys getting here...
Police are also involved and turn a blind eye to their dodgy practices...

Close them ALL down and tighten up control before allowing them to operate again.
