Cabinet has been briefed by Eskom about the risk of a total national electricity blackout – and the US embassy in Pretoria has drawn up an evacuation plan partly designed to get its staff out safely if the lights go off in South Africa once and for all.

Government on Tuesday dismissed a hoax statement saying it had been warned by Eskom the main power grid could crash, plunging the country into darkness for over two weeks, the department of communication said.

Eskom has muzzled their spokesperson, Andrew Etzinger, so expect more of this rubbish...

Eskom have been all over twitter saying that the 2 weeks is a hoax. They are not providing any period of their own other than saying they are working to stop it failing.

The 2 weeks is not a hoax. In fact it is probably the upside story to a grid failure.

Eskom have introduced a shedding level 4. And I'm sure that they could have any number of levels. The sad story is that these bastards will lie at every turn. If they were down to their last generator in their last power station being on, they would claim that the gird is still up. Technically I suppose but for all intents and purposes the grid will have failed - if they time sliced that energy we'd get 5 minutes a day.

So while they play fiddles and argue semantics there is a very real danger of being in a state where it's off way, way more than it's on. Level 3 is off for 8 hours a day, Level 4 will be 16 hours.

The easiest way to deal with Eskom is to work from the premise that they lie. Anything that they say that may turn out to be true is by chance, not design.

I do sometimes wonder if the government believe everybody in SA was born yesterday;

do they honestly believe people are not intelligent enough to realize the Grid will collapse; not if; when and for how long;

I think ESKOM Trying hard to hang on to some kind of legitimacy; they know very well whats going on; and they know they caused it;
and their desperately trying to save face; or at least make it seem that something else is to blame weather ect......
