Eskom quietly shuts down 980MW Koeberg unit

Eskom has confirmed that it shut down Koeberg's Unit 1 generator on Wednesday, 11 September 2024, with the power utility taking it offline while Unit 2 is offline.

This is according to energy expert Chris Yelland, who slammed the power utility and the country's nuclear regulator for a lack of transparency over the shutdown.

They only call media briefings when they are scared, and those days are over with GNU.

Actually some twitter users make a valid point, if it doesn't bring about load shedding, at this point who cares.
I was wondering the same thing, if your network provider has a tower that is down but your service is not interrupted, do you interrogate them on why they did not inform you about the faulty tower?

I would understand if we had loadshedding and they didn't inform us, besides that, it's an operational matter that does not affect us, I personally don't need a live commentary on Eskom operations, unless it affects me, just get it sorted.

But its Nuclear, and the ANC will make it blow up with their incompetence /s

In all honesty though, I saw the "Experts" tweet yesterday and went "Ok cool, who cares?"

Exactly, up until Sunday I didn't know, but it didn't bug me as there was still lights. Plus in the past when it happened, it didn't bug people as we still had power.

Yup and he only knew about it from other people bringing it up to Eskom

Stuck valve, steam stuff
Sounds like they have a backup system that kicked in, but they need redundancy so they've shut it down to repair. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Also so weird hearing someone say that Koeberg has been down a lot.

The only real downtime Koeberg has had recently that I can recall is the end-of-life extension work that's been happening, which is perfectly understandable and necessary. When it comes to technical faults Koeberg is extremely reliable, even by international standards.
