Eskom looks to wind for power

I was thinking we could put him in a giant hamster wheel...same effect I suppose.
 
Put a turbine in front of every government department and run the country off all that ministerial hot air!

52 Turbines! .. 120MegaWatt!! Eskom is Load Shedding due to a shortfall of 2000MegaWatt. Someone didnt get their cleverer sleep.

Wind power for SA is not really viable - keeping in mind that the power is only being generated when the wind blows. SA does not have significant areas where the wind blows continuously and strong enough to supply base load demand. And if the wind is not reliable, you still have to provide back-up so the capital cost is double.

What % of 24/7/52 does it blow in EL?
Eskom have been looking at wind power for decades (I have been involved in some of the studies in 1990's) and it is not a reliable or capital and cost effective solution to the current problems. It should be implemented in SA as supplemental power to reduce output of older and less efficient coal stations or in conjunction with a water storage scheme, but not as a base-load first tier generation system. Wind is not reliable enough in SA.

Heh - I really have no idea.
I was guessing.

But yes, it cannot be the "first line", they can be used WHEN the wind is blowing so as to save on coal and emissions.

The wind farms mentioned in the original article were built and are operational. This is a new proposal.
 
IPP's Eskom, approach them. Wind won't suffice in South Africa and Wind power is environmentally bad.
