Eskom nonsense now making world headlines

I wonder what FIFA thinks of all of this, wouldn't be surprised if the World Cup disappears soon.

heh. if we get the world cup it will be something short of a miracle. when a country turns off power to mines you know the problem is bigger and badder then they claim!

FIFA is coming this year to do a progress inspection, so lets see what happens.

You can be sure that during the inspection, no effort will be spared to ensure the deligates and their places of accomodation have more than enough electricity... even if it means loadshedding the rest of the whole f-ing country.

Exactly, its all politics anyway, can you imagine the outcry from Africa if SA lost it? Colonial imperialism etc.

SA wont loose the WC2010 ... Sepp Blatter is so far on his 'poor africa' guilt trip that it wont move.

Why does it sound like the world is coming to an end in 2010? Everybody just seems to care about the World Cup, and doesn't seems to care that once it's over we will still have to go on living.

What about 2011 and onwards?

A lot of us'll be gone by then.:D

well i can tell you now that the building of stadiums has already been hampered by load shedding. we all thinking of the actual event, we have yet to build half the infrastructure of the event.

also the gautrain project - they gonna miss that deadline too and if by some great miracle it is ready by 2009/10 i bet the day it launches it will get load shedded :D

nah - i said last year or the year before we WILL NEVER pull of a WC 2010. I was shot down for being negative etc etc and unpatriotic etc etc.

I will be honest - I had a revelation last year that moaning, groaning etc is pointless. We all want our country to be like a UK or an Australia, which is a noble hope. Nothing wrong with a dream or two, but if there is anything i know.

South Africa will remain a 3rd World for a very very very very long time. I am inclined to suggest we will NEVER be a 1st World.

Even the BBC are calling the 2010 World Cup into question. And what about this woman who needs oxygen to stay alive ... man oh man oh man

CNN said the same.

Mine power cuts is set to affect up to 5 MILLION people (The Star front page today - not sure of an online link for reference).
Thats 10% of the population.

Yeah - the **** has hit the fan big time.
Sasol has also been told to save power or be cut off.
Who can say "fuel shortage"?

Then, Ricard, his head deserves to roll. He is charged with ensuring a successful WC, not a "white guilt wash".

Because, it will be the biggest single statement to the world of how incompetent the ANC are - if the WC is pulled from us this year, and it does not affect the polls in 2009, nothing will.

if by some great miracle it is ready by 2009/10 i bet the day it launches it will get load shedded :D

And burnt within seconds! :D
Viva!

I disagree. If Blatter begins to sniff a disaster, plan B WILL be implemented

I agree - I doubt he is a fool.
It is his honour and legacy on the line here.
Rather be considered the man who almost fell for the "Africa can do it card", than the man who did.

I doubt its solely his decision to make anyway, there must be some sort of board or committee. But the government will probably guarantee to do anything necessary, including shutting down mines etc. to ensure power during the tournament.

They probably would make those promises.
However, the FIFA people are not the ANC voter base - they are capable of rational thought.
They will realise, like we do, that no mines = 5 million people with no food.
And they will realise that hungry, desperate people are a threat.

They will realise that the stadiums also do not operate in a vacuum - that the tourist who spends 2 weeks here for the WC, will only spend 2, maybe 6, hours in a stadium, and the rest of the time he will need water, food, shelter, and so on.

No - I doubt the ANC can promise anything that FIFA will not see through as a false promise. Not at this stage.

And, if they(FIFA) DO go ahead, let the blood of killed tourists be on their heads if the power is indeed turned off in all industry and the populace riots.

But WHY did they take SO long to do something about the power business? It just does'nt make f'n SENSE!!! DAMN.....whish i could just for 1 min think like they do...just to get some "basic" idea...:(

Get blind drunk, smoke some wacky weed, and pass out.
The time between then and when you regain consciousness is as close as you are likely to get - short of a lobotomy.

I really wouldn't be surprised if SA does lose it soon, expect leaks from unnamed FIFA sources about the possibility soon, i.e. FIFA testing the waters to see what reaction they get.

The other "problem" is FIFA will look and say "hmmm, this ain't likely to improve - and if we leave it to 2009, then it will be too late for another country to take over - it is now or never".
