Eskom strike could mean massive blackouts

Mooted 25% increase in tariff's this year, Eskom potential strikes, unscheduled load shedding...
Political interference in Eskom has really done a number on the parastatal.

I'm glad I went with the alternative, and invested in my own power.
The competition for Eskom is in self provision. Solar makes sense for household use, and is rapidly approaching the point where Eskom is more expensive per KW than your own investment is, even including storage.

The complete mismanagement of the economy and subsequent depreciation of the rand has made it a tight race though. If we were sitting at R6 to the dollar it would be a no-brainer.

We have no postal service, no airline, no electricity, no police, and a government with no competence.
 
Good point lSheed_cn -- agree entirely. 25% price rises are really just YET another reason to start making your own.

(Rands fall against the dollar is a problem... but hopefully less quick than the rising electricity price!)

As a farmer's son, this had me in stitches. Why not do it now though? Growing stuff is fun and rewarding, and not too difficult as we now have Google if any issues are experienced =)

Humor aside though, unfortunately as I see it, the only striking farmer is a dead farmer... =/
 
In a couple years I think that the SA will be veeery different haha.

A lot of cities around the world are starting to revitalize their inner areas with urban vertical growing schemes, PV, water collection etc etc - if service delivery (not to mention the prices of everything, including fuel) gets to a point where nothing works anymore here, we'll be forced to do something that's a luxury in first world countries (but a necessity in 3rd's) which is grow our own food and collect our own water (subsistence farming). Solar is still a bit expensive but ja nee, can just go to bed/rise with the Sun.
 
The solution to this requires a government with a firm hand.

Openly tell the Unions and their members that if they strike they will be arrested and charged with Economic Terrorism... no exceptions.

We HAVE to stop bowing to these unions. Why can't we have a leader like Maggie Thatcher?
 
Strike action is positive in as far as it continues to further expose cataclysmic leadership and policy weakness at government level. Sooner rather than later.

Obviously that makes no difference to the majority in this country prove of such claim can be also seen as an example considering what is going on in ZIM for years now an the same trend is slowly happening here locally. We now only wait for the ANC to appoint a lifetime president then the cycle will be complete.

It just baffles me that not more people are seeing this play on the cards. All the pawns have been positioned in strategic positions for this power play. It will most likely be advertised as a sacrificial, selfless and "temporary" action for the good of the nation to have an experienced president extend his time in office until the country's crisis has been averted, instead of getting a new president amidst the trouble...and of course he'll stay on until he rots...along with the country...to the cheers of crowds thanking him for his patriotism and dedication in the liberation struggle.
