Again, why not schedule maintenance on the weekends and mandate load shedding then? Keep the work week productive.

The maintenance takes longer than a day or two
 
Zero redundancy.

We had that with the police, health care, internet, roads and now we have it with the post office and ESKOM. Seems consistent at least.
 
I think we should organise a protest march against illegal connections. Why should we who pay suffer whilst these thieves blatantly steal?

Not the thieves, but rather the police who blatantly loot.

Do you really think anyone will hear you, nevermind do something about it?

Protest marches are the most stupid thing ever. Why not petition your MP or senator or address the parliament to change the law.
Oh it works that way in USA, not here.... sucks to have democracy.

Seriously though, the amount of people employed in high positions in this country that are just 'playing' ceo/cfo/coo etc is frightening, and this is the result of years of it.

Several years back I worked in head office of a very large company in sa(won't say which), there was literally an entire floor of empty offices with expensive furniture and name plates on the doors, they belonged to people in charge of running things but never did, so everyone else had to try share their workload as well as doing their own. They'd just come in once every 2 weeks or so to show face or sign of on a pile of urgent documents that were now a few weeks late. No one could do a thing about it as you get labeled as racist and dragged through the process of 'retrenchment'. I actually ended up calling one out over a stupid idea, I said he was never here and didn't know the business so how can he dictate what we should do. Because I said, 'thats a stupid idea' to him, I got labelled as racist, which taught me things like the ccma and uif doesn't work for white males.(I'm sure many have similar stories)

Another personal example was a few years back needed documents 'urgently' signed off by 'insert government department of choice here'(had enough **** from them to last a life time, don't need more so won't say who). Turns out, there is only one person who can sign a piece of paper, so, if they die in a car crash or something, everything comes to a standstill for years. A simple 4-6 week process started around August 2009. After first couple of years got lawyers involved. They'd send someone to his office daily and wait for him. That lasted around 6 months. There was always an excuse, he's on sick leave, study leave, annual leave, personal day, urgent meeting. These places close beginning of dec and open beginning of feb, yet they all still get 6 weeks leave annually etc. About a month before we got it signed, our lawyer got a request for us to meet him without lawyer present, which sounded dodgy(guess what he wanted) so we responded with a 'not to worry, its taken too long now and we are now going to report all of this to the media'. We had notice of it being signed with 45min or so of that response. I can't prove what they wanted, no one ever asked, but its a very fishy situation. Finally got it October 2014. Thats over 5 years for a simple piece of paper to be signed.

Nowadays when I see corporates and governments I just see buildings of empty offices with expensive furniture, every now and then, one guy shows up to work and ruins 1 or 2 actual workers lives then heads back on 'leave'. I'm assuming eskom is no different. Our new capacity has probably been delayed partly due to someone who is the only one that can sign a document, but has been on leave, sick leave, study leave etc for the last 5 years. gg bbbbeeeee.

Eskom has reached the point where the gap between the minimum baseload of 25 000MW (at 3am) and the amount of available generation over weekends (27 000MW), including Open Cycle Gas (Diesel) Turbines, is so small that they can't even pump water during the weekend nights anymore. It is a frightening situation.

Palmiet is 400MW
Drakensburg is 1000MW

Total 1400MW.

If they are pumping, then 27000MW - 1400MW = 25600MW. That's 600MW above minimum baseload.

They basically have zero extra power to even perform additional maintenance like they said they need to do.

I still would like to know where 17000MW has gone? 10% maintenance and 10% unexpected down time is only 8400MW, or half? We've lost 40% of generating capacity.
