Eskom's plan to build small nuclear reactors

You plug it into the Renewable power grid. Seriously, smelters don't use some kind of different kind of electricity than other users. An electron is an electron.
And when the wind don't blow and the sun don't shine? They fire up the gas/diesel
 
Really so they are building more coal for?

Cause they like the smoke it makes?

I lot of people are wondering why they are building more - because the capacity factors on their coal plants are dropping to something like 50%, and the plants are starting to lose money.

People speculate it might have to do with local government incentives.

But it is a mystery, I will grant you that.

Or... They cannot run their production, those light shows at night with renewables... It's still not an ideal solution

Well. Batteries and storage. And luckily wind and solar is not synced. And gas plants to bridge the gap is okay. I mean we use gas today to try and bring demand and supply in balance (because coal is terrible at following demand).

I mean I am not arguing that there are no engineering challenges. But that is just it - engineering challenges.

Hell our grid was originally designed around engineering challenges of the times.The grid was modelled around "Baseload" not because it is the best way to model consumption, but because coal plants cannot easily adjust to demand and had to be run at fixed capacity.

You can also add an inefficient grid to that which is essential for renewables. They don't share enough power between their provinces.

Yes, they have their timing a bit off that's all. There's no reason why a place like Australia with no big industry can't pull it off. Their demand is tiny compared to us.

Also, this "melt down" was just over 7 days because of perfect storm of factors. Did their power go off? Would this have happened if there was a million EVs with V2G plugged into the grid?

Who knows, but it does seem Australia is heading towards issues
They might be getting loadshedding again, because they did actually have it in the past as well

 
Some new modular reactor power stations are much much cleaner than those designed even 20 years ago
