Title : Ethernet vs WiFi Speed Lost.

Never even saw the rest and absolutely nobody commented on it being anything relevant to Apple.

The content is completely ubiquitous across brands.

Didn’t even notice it was in the Apple section until now.

Try harder.

You are literally running a false flag operation here hoping to bait people and then nobody falls for it and you make up your own narrative of how everyone was in camp Apple and yet not a single person fell for it.

It started because @SauRoNZA could not believe the article was accurate and the survey process was totally incorrect
I'd think losses are reasonably minimal for the majority of consumers as relatively few people have fibre speeds in excess of their WiFi speeds. A half decent WiFi router should comfortably give in excess of 200mbps, so losses only come into play at fibre speeds above that. And then you just move closer to the router...

Re-reading the article, I think this paragraph is a major blooper. Unless they do internet VERY differently in the US, equating ethernet speeds to internet speeds is a blooper.

Ookla, the maker of Speedtest, shared an interesting study today that looks at the percentage of Ethernet speed that comes through when using WiFi. Or said another way, a look at how much internet performance you’re losing with WiFi.

So yea - kinda agree with you ? It shouldn't be an issue ? But it is for some reason? That's why I reckon most people wouldn't really get so worked up over this article if it was didn't mention Apple.

If you have a router in your study, it may battle to hit 100Mbps in the lounge or certain parts of the house. So it could very well be a limitation for many people who simply go mesh or wired APs .

Not a train smash. Or shouldn't be anyway

I'm certainly not an expert, so can only go by personal experience. Sitting here one floor up and three rooms across from my router my connection speed is oscillating between 150mbps and 250mbps on my phone. My laptop (a 2016 MBP) gives about 250mbps when working from the couch in the living room. In the rare case when I do need faster network transfer speeds I simply move to the study where the router is situated. And if I really need gigabit I just pop a LAN cable into the dongle.

And as stated earlier, fibre connection is 40mbps so I'm not losing any internet performance.

I don't get why so much emotion in this thread?

This is exactly what I’ve been saying all along but apparently it’s because I’m pro-Apple or some bullshit.

A massive assumption is made that everyone is running Gigabit fibre which simply isn’t true.

The Study itself is a little bit more to the point and actually nullifies Trolby’s every statement in this thread because it actually says ISP’s aren’t doing enough to push wireless forward and in no way concludes that Ethernet is the better option.


It’s quite clear Trolby never actually read that.

The assumption that everyone has Ethernet internet speeds is still bullshit.

The stats themselves are just fine, the correlation with what is unknown is what’s bullshit.

The part that makes it clear you didn’t read it is that they clearly state ISP’s should do more to push new standards of WiFi and that only 10% is on WiFi6, while you were telling us everyone is on WiFi6 with Gigabit routers for “years now”.

Meanwhile a huge majority is on WiFi4 (so not gigabit) just like we said and the others on WiFi5 (maybe gigabit).

Basically all your “known industry knowledge” is thrown out the window if you use open your eyes.

But the fact you said “looks like much the same data” is the real nail in the coffin because it’s clear to see this is the first time you looked at it.

Which reminds me of our chat back then . Remember you said no company cables building anymore because of varying reasons like safety being better on Wifi than Ethernet ? I actually asked a few people and here are the the answers :

1 - No one believes that WiFi is safter than Ethernet. Not one person.
2 - Everyone would cable the building if they moved to a new office.

But there's a bit more on point #2 ... up until 2020 everyone had wired VoIP phones on their desks . That was the norm and many people preferred an actual hard phone. Since 2020 with COVID, more and more people are moving to Teams and headsets - but we're not fully at that point yet. If these companies moved now - May 2023 - they're still cable the building for the phones . This could change going foward

Incorrect.

Companies have been rolling out full VOIP setups on Teams and other tech long before Covid inside their offices. It pretty much became the standard on any new setup well before 2015 and an active conversion on existing setups from then onwards.

Covid obviously saw VOIP setups peak because suddenly everyone was at home. They didn’t change their office infrastructure for Covid…they changed their infrastructure to be remote friendly if it wasn’t already.

The only VOIP hardware in modern companies lives at reception and in the meeting rooms now.

Many offices simply scaled down or packed up entirely to go fully remote and fully cloud based at that.

The very same way VPN’s suddenly skyrocketed where many company’s didn’t need them before or only at minimal capacity.

Obviously companies are not going to burn money with no reason if what they have in place is working and still supported.

But it’s really pointless arguing with a fool who needs to go ask people about this stuff to support what he’s already decided as the truth, when I work with these things daily and know exactly what’s actually happening in the world.

VoIP hardware sales number is increasing yearly - I wonder who is buying them if they changed strategy almost a decade back ? Why are companies still placing orders for 100 x VoIP phones to sit in reception ? It seems a bit bizarre to me ....

I don't get how it increased as well? It almost looks to the layman that more employees are slowly returning to the office?

In other words, 72.5% of private-sector organizations — up from 60% in the July-to-September 2021 period — said they did not have employees working remotely.
