this morning on sky sports new ...they had englands euro 2012 stats
in the 4 games ..i might not be accurate as this is what i remember
11 shots on target where 5 goals scored 3 conceded
average of 300 passes per game (SF's averaged around 200 more)
average possession was 39%
cant remember harts statistics but he saved alot
so yeah england played schit

Well, I've been reading the English press and general opinion is not negative for the following reasons;
- Capello was on a mission to nowhere
- Including his time spent finishing the season with West Brom, Roy Hodgson had all of 43 days to sort England out
- Due to both of the preceding points, public expectation was incredibly low
- England, while never lighting the show up, only lost one game and at times (Swedish game) the squad, spurred on by it's young cast, looked promising.
All in all I don't think there is too much to complain about. Hopefully after this Hodgson chucks the ancient guard out (Terry, Gerrard, Lampard) and forces a new path with some of the younger chaps. He's got four years to build something credible.

i dont support england for the fact that they play a boring game
they players have no creativity when playing for england
and yes what you say is correct
for 2014 i would love to see cleverly, wilshire , welbeck in the team along with smalling,jones, the ox, baines and cant think of others now
but they need something different for a change and get those guys in will be great

LOL! As much as I dislike the Spanish way, nobody is going to be giving them a hiding for a while when it counts. The last time they conceded more than two goals in a competitive game was when Northern Ireland put 3 past them on the 6th of September 2006 in a Euro 2008 qualifier. . .
They conceded 2 goals at the World Cup, 3 goals at Euro 2008 and to date have conceded just the one at Euro 2012.
Xavi, Iniesta and co. are going to starve Ronaldo of any possession and if Ronaldo doesn't touch the ball, Portugal are dead in the water.

I'm not arguing that England where less than stellar, but at the same time they were not pulverised. Yes, stats indicate they were played off the park, but they hung in there and did not ship goals by the boatload and they did manage a come-from-behind result spurred by younger players against Sweden. I don't think Hodgson will build a World Cup winner, but he could build something positive, like maybe get beyond the quarterfinals of World Cup 2014, something England have not done since 1990. As you pointed out though, they need to get more creative.
The Premier League clubs have all been buoyed by foreign imports when it comes to creative masterminds. England desperately need a Paul Gascoigne (minus drugs, booze and mental issues), somebody that can create magic in the middle. Right now it's basic 4-4-2 stuff with fast guys outside. Pass to Young/Milner/Walcott, charge down the wing, cross, header. So vanilla and so predictable. There's nothing in the centre of the park. Germany have an entire midfield of creativity and even fullbacks that can run inside and make things happen (Lahm is a beauty at this).

Hopefully the new crop will be ready and uninjured for 2014. Wilshere, McEachren and Cleverly seem to be doing things in a very un-England way.

Yes, England weren't that great, but that is mainly because they couldn't hold onto the ball in the final third. They would be brilliant at the back, they got the ball forward, but the wings and forwards just kept losing it. It's not like they turlted, and I'll go so far as to say that the England - Italy match was the most exciting match I've seen so far in this tournament, despite the lack of clinical finishing.
Why wasn't Downing given a chance?
Well, with Downing in the equation, the ball would have found 0 players. Simple really. 3 > 0

it was exciting...who doesnt like to watch some guy destroy a team with passes ....
england defended most of the time ...i for one hate those matches ...
but yep like everyone says hodgson hardly had time ...but the thing is those players have been playing together few years now and nothing changed since capello left in terms of team starters and formation

These lads tell us truthfully why England failed and always will fail at major tournaments. You won't hear any English TV channel tell it like this - as it really is!

Essentially they needed United's Midfield combo Young, Cleverly, Wilshere, Carrick
With the current team the problem was the defensive minded approach where Gerrard, Parker, was told to stay back and provide 0 support... When the ball was hoofed up field, Welbeck gets the ball to Rooney (by luck) seeing as Rooney was playing in a 4-4-2 formation Rooney would have no one to pass back to as Gerrard/Parker was protecting the back 4...
The formation felt more like a 4-5-1 formation but urging Rooney to play in the 4-4-2 formation...
